Rubrik (RBRK) shares experienced a volatile week, climbing to an all-time high of $107.70 on Thursday before reversing sharply after the company released its fiscal second-quarter earnings. The stock fell more than 7% in the following session, retesting the psychologically important $100 level. The decline was driven by a sequential dip in gross margin, even as the company delivered robust revenue growth and raised its full-year guidance.
Strong top-line growth, but margin pressure
For the quarter, Rubrik reported revenue of $427 million, up 38% year-over-year and ahead of analyst expectations. The company also generated $76.8 million in free cash flow, a significant improvement from the prior year. Subscription revenue continued to scale, and the number of customers spending at least $100,000 annually surpassed 3,000 for the first time.
Despite these positives, gross margin slipped from the previous quarter, raising concerns about near-term profitability. The company remains unprofitable on a net basis, with cumulative losses exceeding $2 billion over the past few years. Its market capitalization now stands at roughly $22 billion, a valuation that some investors view as stretched given the current earnings profile.
AI-driven cybersecurity tailwinds
Rubrik operates in the rapidly evolving cybersecurity space, focusing on data protection, backup, and recovery. The company counts major enterprises such as PepsiCo, Adobe, and Home Depot among its clients. Management highlighted that the threat landscape is shifting, with AI-powered attacks becoming more prevalent. The company now estimates its total addressable market at $125 billion by 2029, up from previous projections.
CEO Bipul Sinha emphasized that frontier AI models have fundamentally changed the cybersecurity environment, requiring machine-speed recovery and autonomous AI agent security. Rubrik's new Agentic Cyber Resilience platform aims to address these emerging threats, positioning the company for long-term growth.
Guidance and valuation
Rubrik guided third-quarter revenue to a range of $429 million to $431 million, and full-year revenue to between $1.685 billion and $1.693 billion. That compares with the consensus estimate of $1.64 billion for the year, suggesting upside. Analysts project revenue could reach $2 billion next year.
However, the stock's valuation remains a point of debate. At current levels, RBRK trades at a significant premium to its revenue growth rate, and the company is still burning cash on a GAAP basis. Some investors may view the recent pullback as a chance to enter at a more reasonable price, while others may wait for evidence of margin expansion.
Technical outlook
From a technical standpoint, the daily chart shows a strong uptrend since May, when the stock traded as low as $42.40. The recent pullback has brought the price back to the 50-day moving average, a level that has historically provided support. The formation of an inverted head-and-shoulders pattern suggests the potential for a continuation higher, with a measured move targeting $120.
As long as the stock holds above the 50-day moving average, the bullish bias remains intact. A break below that level could signal a deeper correction. Investors should monitor the $100 support zone closely in the coming sessions.
For context, other tech names have faced similar margin pressures recently. For instance, HP shares slid on memory cost headwinds, and Nvidia's stock slipped despite beating estimates. The market's reaction to margin dips appears to be a recurring theme.
Investors will be watching whether Rubrik can sustain its growth trajectory while improving profitability. The company's ability to expand margins will be a key factor in justifying its premium valuation.
