Zcash (ZEC) is trading around $495, up about 2.7% in the last 24 hours, as investors weigh a mix of institutional accumulation and new ecosystem developments against a technical resistance zone that could define the next leg of the move.
One of the most notable catalysts comes from Cypherpunk Technologies, the treasury company that holds a significant portion of ZEC's supply. In its second-quarter results, Cypherpunk reported net income of $39.4 million, a sharp reversal from the $16.6 million loss in the same period last year. The turnaround was largely driven by a $46 million unrealized gain on its ZEC holdings, which appreciated from $243.35 to $400.09 during the quarter. The company still posted a $4.7 million operating loss, underscoring that the profit was primarily a mark-to-market effect.
As of Aug. 11, Cypherpunk held 323,394.38 ZEC at an average purchase price of $341.83, representing about 1.92% of Zcash's circulating supply. With a hard cap of 21 million coins, continued accumulation by large holders could tighten available supply, especially if those coins remain off exchanges. However, the impact on price will depend on whether the buying persists and how much ZEC other holders bring to market.
Beyond direct holdings, capital is flowing into Zcash infrastructure. In March, Cypherpunk invested $5 million in Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL), alongside backers including a16z, Coinbase, Paradigm, Winklevoss Capital, and Chapter One. ZODL is behind the Zodl wallet and focuses on improving usability and protocol development. This marks Cypherpunk's first technology investment outside its direct ZEC holdings, broadening its exposure to the ecosystem.
Another adoption catalyst is the launch of Zcash Labs, an independent organization aimed at helping businesses and institutions integrate Zcash. Its initial projects include technical integrations, privacy infrastructure, and funding initiatives to boost practical use. One of its first supported projects, zcashtocash, enables peer-to-peer ZEC-to-fiat transactions and currently supports six fiat apps across more than 100 geographies, according to the launch announcement.
Technical picture: resistance cluster at $503-$510
ZEC's daily chart shows the price stabilizing after a pullback from July's high near $570. Buyers have repeatedly defended the $460-$480 zone, and the price is now testing the $500 psychological level. The immediate hurdle is a confluence of technical indicators: the 0.236 Fibonacci extension at $503.58, the upper Ichimoku cloud around $503.86, and the Kijun-sen near $510.24. The daily VWAP sits at $495.47, with the upper deviation at $509.41.
A daily close above the $503-$510 range would clear multiple barriers at once, potentially opening the door to the 0.382 Fibonacci level at $536.23, followed by $562.33 and $588.42. The latter would bring ZEC back toward its July swing high, and a break above that would signal a more decisive structural shift. Beyond that, Fibonacci extensions point to $625.57 and $672.90, with the 1.618 extension at $809.57 requiring a sustained rally.
Momentum indicators are mixed. The Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) has recovered from -0.15 in early August to around -0.01, indicating that selling pressure has eased but not yet confirmed strong accumulation. A sustained move above zero would be a more bullish signal. The Ichimoku setup is similarly compressed, with ZEC trading around the thin cloud and the Tenkan-sen at $497.49 and Kijun-sen at $510.24 keeping the range tight.
If ZEC fails to break the $503-$510 cluster, the first support zone lies at the VWAP lower deviation near $481.53 and the Ichimoku boundary around $478.60. A daily close below that would weaken the recovery and could bring the July swing reference near $451.75 back into play.
For context, Zcash's recent price action comes amid broader crypto market movements, with privacy coins reacting to macroeconomic data and other altcoins seeing similar technical setups. The coming days will likely hinge on whether ZEC can sustain momentum above the $500 mark and clear the resistance cluster.
