Oklo shares have rebounded this week, climbing nearly 4% in premarket trading after a 12% gain in the prior session, as investor interest in small modular reactor (SMR) stocks returns. NuScale and other peers have also seen renewed buying. However, the stock remains far below its all-time high of $194.26, and persistent insider selling continues to raise caution flags.

According to Barchart data, insiders have executed 13 sales over the past three months, offloading 641,806 shares worth over $22 million at current prices. In total, 53 sell orders covering 4.3 million shares have been placed. Notable sellers include COO Caroline Cochran and Chair and CEO Jacob Dewitte. Insider selling is often viewed as a bearish signal, especially when it occurs consistently.

Business fundamentals remain unproven

Oklo operates in the SMR space, which holds promise amid rising electricity demand from data centers and artificial intelligence. The company has signed significant agreements, including a 12 GW deal with Switch, and partnerships with Meta, Equinix, Diamondback Energy, and Centrus Energy. These agreements could eventually monetize its technology.

Yet the company's financials tell a different story. In its most recent quarter, Oklo reported revenue of just $1.2 million, while its net loss widened to over $48 million, compared to a $24 million loss in the same period last year. This cash burn and lack of meaningful revenue underscore the speculative nature of the investment.

Analysts have responded by trimming their price targets. Citigroup's Vikram Bagri cut his target from $76 to $57, and Truist's Christopher Souther lowered his from $55 to $51. The average analyst estimate now stands at $85, down from $88 a month ago. Short interest has climbed to 21%, reflecting bearish sentiment.

Technical picture remains bearish

On the daily chart, Oklo stock bottomed at $36.60 on July 29 and currently trades around $44.27. It has retested the resistance level of $45.21, which was its lowest point on April 7. The stock remains below its 50-day exponential moving average (EMA), as well as the Supertrend and Ichimoku cloud indicators, suggesting that sellers are still in control.

Given the ongoing insider selling, unproven business model, and technical weakness, Oklo shares could face further downside. If the stock breaks below current support, the next key level to watch is $20. Investors should weigh these risks against the potential long-term opportunity in nuclear energy. For context, similar dynamics have played out in other speculative names, such as the recent insider-driven selloff in LAB token.

While the SMR sector has attracted attention due to AI-driven power demand, Oklo's path to profitability remains uncertain. The company's ability to convert its agreements into revenue will be critical. Meanwhile, the broader market has seen other stocks break out on technical patterns, like Rivian's recent head-and-shoulders breakout, but Oklo's chart suggests a different trajectory.

For investors, the combination of insider selling, widening losses, and bearish technicals warrants caution. The stock's elevated short interest indicates that many traders expect further declines. As always, thorough due diligence is essential before making any investment decision.
