Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) shares advanced 1.7% on Monday, buoyed by a report that the company is preparing to unveil its next-generation Maia 300 artificial intelligence chip as early as next month. The move underscores Microsoft's accelerating efforts to lessen its reliance on Nvidia's processors amid intensifying competition in custom AI silicon.

According to The Information, citing sources familiar with the matter, Microsoft could introduce the Maia 300 at its fall event. The chip is the latest in Microsoft's Azure Maia series, which began with the Maia 100 in November 2023 and continued with the Maia 200 earlier this year, manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) using a 3-nanometer process. The Maia 200 featured high-speed SRAM memory to boost AI inference performance.

The Maia 300 represents a significant step in Microsoft's custom silicon roadmap. The Information reported that Microsoft is in talks with TSMC to secure manufacturing capacity for over 300,000 Maia 300 chips, with deliveries targeted for 2027. Microsoft ultimately hopes to secure capacity for more than one million units, though supply constraints and negotiation outcomes could affect those plans. The company is also reportedly courting major cloud customers, including Anthropic, to deploy the chips on Azure.

This move is part of a broader industry trend. Alphabet has begun recognizing revenue from direct sales of its Tensor Processing Units, while Amazon continues expanding adoption of its Trainium processors. Last month, The Information reported that Alphabet is designing another custom AI server processor, internally called "Frozen v2," expected to launch in 2028, with potential power efficiency gains of six to ten times over existing Google AI processors. These efforts reflect a strategic shift among hyperscale cloud providers to gain more control over AI hardware and reduce costs.

Bernstein SocGen Group also lifted its price target on Microsoft shares to $660 from $647, maintaining an Outperform rating. The brokerage expressed confidence in Microsoft's long-term AI infrastructure strategy, arguing that concerns about data center spending are overstated. Bernstein noted that Microsoft has expanded data center capacity more slowly than cloud revenue growth, with future lease obligations spread across multiple years. Purchase commitments for power, cooling, and hardware are concentrated over the next twelve months, with limited obligations beyond that period.

Bernstein added that even if AI demand weakened unexpectedly, additional capacity could still support Microsoft's traditional CPU-based cloud business. The firm described Microsoft's expansion as measured and aligned with current customer demand, while acknowledging that hardware costs have increased despite improving equipment availability.

Microsoft's long-term goal is to achieve vertically integrated AI infrastructure. Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott said last year that the company ultimately intends to rely primarily on internally designed processors across its data centers. "Absolutely," Scott said when asked if that was the objective. He emphasized that the strategy extends beyond chip design to include networks, cooling, and overall system optimization.

As generative AI becomes central to cloud computing, ownership of underlying hardware has emerged as a key competitive differentiator. Microsoft's push into custom silicon, alongside its Azure cloud growth, positions it to better control costs and performance. The company's recent earnings have highlighted strong Azure growth, as seen in its Q4 beat with 43% Azure growth, and its AI investments have been a focal point for investors. Meanwhile, Nvidia shares fell about 1.8% on Monday, reflecting the market's reaction to Microsoft's chip ambitions.
