Twilio's stock surged to its highest level since January 2022 after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings. Shares climbed to $248, marking a gain of more than 500% from their 2023 trough, and lifting the company's market capitalization above $37 billion.
Strong Q2 performance
The company's revenue grew 22% year-over-year to $1.5 billion in the second quarter, while gross profit rose 20% to $726 million. The messaging segment, which now accounts for 59% of total revenue, was the primary growth driver. Gross margin expanded to 49%, a significant improvement from 8% in the same period last year. Free cash flow also strengthened, reaching $353 million in the quarter.
Product innovation and AI positioning
Twilio has positioned itself as a critical infrastructure provider in the age of AI, offering services such as SMS, voice, and email that are essential for customer verification, alerts, and marketing. The company recently launched new products, including conversation memory and an orchestrator, to enhance its platform. CEO Jeff Lawson stated, "We unveiled a revamped Twilio platform giving customers the building blocks they need to power rich, lifelong conversations. In a world where humans and AI agents increasingly work side by side, Twilio is providing the infrastructure to power them both."
Analyst upgrades and valuation
Following the earnings release, several analysts raised their price targets for Twilio. Rosenblatt increased its target from $230 to $275, Needham raised it to $280, BTIG boosted it to $285, and both Oppenheimer and Citizens hiked theirs to $275. Analysts also note that the stock's valuation appears attractive: the forward price-to-earnings ratio stands at 33, well below its five-year average of 157, and the forward PEG ratio is 1.06.
Technical outlook
From a technical perspective, Twilio's stock has formed a bullish flag pattern on the weekly chart, with the 50-week moving average crossing above the 100-week moving average—a signal often referred to as a golden cross. The stock remains above the Supertrend indicator, suggesting continued upward momentum. If the pattern holds, the next key resistance level could be around $300, representing a potential 25% upside from current levels.
For context, other tech stocks have also seen post-earnings volatility. For instance, AMD's stock dipped on margin concerns despite long-term AI optimism, while SpaceX jumped on its Q2 beat and analyst upgrades. Twilio's strong performance stands out in the current market environment.
Investors should note that while Twilio's growth and margin improvements are encouraging, the company operates in a competitive landscape. Its ability to sustain this momentum will depend on continued innovation and execution.
