T-Mobile's stock has been in a steep decline, hitting its lowest level since November 2023. The shares fell to $146.93, a drop of over 46% from their 2025 high, reducing the company's market capitalization from $309 billion to $157 billion. Investors are now looking ahead to the company's earnings report, scheduled for Wednesday, as a potential turning point.
SpaceX Fears Weigh on Telecom Sector
The sell-off in T-Mobile and other telecom stocks has accelerated following SpaceX's acquisition of a low-band spectrum license, reportedly for $8 billion. This move positions SpaceX to offer mobile services directly to American consumers, posing a significant competitive threat. SpaceX has also initiated discussions with cell tower operators such as American Tower, Vertical Bridge, and Crown Castle, indicating plans to use their infrastructure to deliver network coverage in urban areas.
Analysts suggest that SpaceX could become a major rival to established carriers, potentially forcing them to lower prices and compress margins. However, history shows that initial market reactions to competitive threats are often exaggerated. For instance, Netflix underperformed the market when Disney, Comcast, Apple, and Warner launched competing streaming services, yet Disney still holds a substantial market share today.
Earnings Report as a Catalyst
The upcoming earnings release will provide crucial insights into T-Mobile's recent performance. In the last quarter, the company reported a 9% increase in service revenue to $19 billion, with postpaid revenue up 13% to $15.9 billion and net income rising to $3.2 billion. However, postpaid customer additions slowed to 277,000 from 318,000 a year earlier, and churn increased to 0.99% from 0.92%.
Analysts expect the upcoming report to show revenue growth of 5.38% to $23.14 billion, with earnings per share rising from $2.41 to $2.91. The options market is signaling a possible rebound, as the put/call volume ratio stands at 0.53, indicating more calls than puts, with significant call interest at the $150 strike price.
Technical Analysis Points to Potential Bounce
From a technical perspective, T-Mobile shares have been trading within a descending channel, recently breaking below its lower boundary. The stock remains below its 50-day and 100-day exponential moving averages, confirming bearish momentum. Nevertheless, a bounce after earnings is plausible, with a move above $150 potentially opening the door to further gains toward the $160 psychological level.
Investors will be watching the earnings report closely for any signs of stabilization in customer growth and churn metrics, as well as management's outlook on competitive pressures. The outcome could determine whether the stock can reverse its downward trend or continue its slide.
