SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) delivered its first quarterly report as a public company on Tuesday, and while revenue topped expectations, the stock reversed a 9.4% regular-session gain to fall 7.8% in after-hours trading. The market's reaction centered on a $541 million net loss and $15.8 billion in artificial-intelligence capital expenditures, but the earnings also exposed a quieter liability: the rising cost of operating the world's largest satellite constellation.
Starlink remains the profit engine
Second-quarter sales nearly doubled year over year to $7.8 billion, beating the consensus estimate of $6.8 billion. The connectivity division, led by Starlink, generated $4.3 billion in revenue, accounting for more than half of total sales. Starlink ended the quarter with 12 million subscribers, slightly below the 12.19 million analysts had forecast, while average revenue per user fell 22% from a year earlier.
Despite the ARPU decline, connectivity revenue rose 66%, underscoring Starlink's role as the company's primary earnings driver. Morningstar equity analyst Nicolas Owens described Starlink as SpaceX's current "earnings engine" in a July report, noting it could partially finance the company's AI expansion. Melissa Otto of S&P Global Market Intelligence echoed that view before earnings, saying connectivity margins are the main profitability driver while the Space and AI divisions scale.
Joel Shulman of ERShares called Starlink the "crown jewel" of SpaceX. The phrase captures a contradiction: the company's strongest business also carries its greatest exposure to crowded low-Earth orbit.
Orbital congestion becomes a financial issue
Starlink had about 10,860 operational satellites by July 30, making it the largest active constellation ever deployed. These satellites have limited working lives, requiring a continuous cycle of launches, maneuvers, replacement, and deorbiting. The immediate risk is not uncontrolled debris reaching the ground but orbital congestion that could lead to collisions.
According to Space.com, Starlink satellites completed more than 355,000 collision-avoidance maneuvers in the year to May 2026, averaging more than 40 per spacecraft. Hugh Lewis, a space-sustainability expert at the University of Birmingham, told the publication that the industry is approaching a situation where an operational constellation satellite will eventually be involved in a collision. That does not mean an accident is imminent—the maneuvers show SpaceX's automated system is actively reducing danger—but the financial question is whether the workload can keep expanding without consuming more fuel, shortening satellite lives, or requiring heavier investment in tracking.
SpaceX has already warned investors about the cost
SpaceX's prospectus warns that orbital congestion and debris could cause satellite losses or degradation, increase collision-avoidance costs, and force assets to be replaced or repositioned sooner than planned. The disclosure does not quantify a liability or establish that debris costs are material to earnings, but it does show that SpaceX recognizes orbital safety as a financial risk, not merely an engineering problem.
Future regulations may also require additional mitigation spending or constrain licenses. A serious collision could interrupt service, damage customer confidence, and create claims or insurance costs, although investors lack enough information to price those outcomes reliably.
The earnings report highlights a broader tension for SpaceX: its most profitable business is also its most operationally intensive. As the company scales its AI ambitions, the cost of maintaining Starlink's orbital infrastructure could become a more significant drag on margins. For investors, the key will be watching whether Starlink's revenue growth can outpace the rising costs of keeping its constellation safe.
