Nvidia is reportedly discussing a $250 billion financing guarantee to support OpenAI's planned AI data center in southern Ohio, a move that analysts say reinforces the long-term trajectory of the AI infrastructure boom. The project, developed by SoftBank subsidiary SB Energy, could cost over $500 billion and become one of the world's largest AI computing facilities.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the proposed guarantee would help OpenAI secure a lease for a 10-gigawatt data center campus, with the first phase expected to come online in 2028 at around 800 megawatts of power capacity. The financing would cover the lease and associated debt, but not the Nvidia chips installed inside the facility. Separately, Nvidia is also discussing financing for OpenAI's chip purchases worth up to $350 billion.

Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Anurag Rana noted that the structure suggests Nvidia is prepared to support larger AI infrastructure build-outs, easing concerns that capacity demand is fading or that funding markets won't absorb the next wave of projects. The move is seen as constructive for neocloud providers like CoreWeave and Crusoe Energy, which have faced recent headwinds.

BofA Securities reiterated its Buy rating on Nvidia with a $350 price target, highlighting that the company's strategy of supporting both proprietary AI developers like OpenAI and open-source initiatives broadens the long-term market for its processors. Frontier AI labs account for roughly 20% of Nvidia's data center revenue, with the rest coming from a diverse customer base including enterprises and sovereign AI projects.

The financing discussions come amid a surge in AI infrastructure spending, with industry-wide capital expenditure expected to exceed $700 billion this year. Major tech companies including Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta have raised their spending guidance, though some investors question how much of this is supported by operating cash flow versus creative financing arrangements.

The Ohio project, located on federal and privately owned land, will draw power from infrastructure controlled by the U.S. government and financed through a bilateral trade agreement with Japan, which committed $33 billion to a natural gas power plant. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is reportedly involved in determining access to electricity supply. OpenAI is among the most advanced bidders for the site, though Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google have also held discussions.

While the financing structure may fuel debate over sustainability, analysts remain optimistic that the AI investment cycle has years to run. The combination of proprietary AI development and open-source adoption is expected to sustain demand for Nvidia's chips, even as investors scrutinize the role of financing in driving the sector's extraordinary spending.
