Nio (NYSE: NIO) shares have retreated significantly from their 2025 peak, yet the company's operational momentum remains robust. After reaching a year-to-date high of $7.00 in early April, the stock has fallen to approximately $4.65, erasing billions in market value. The decline persists despite a strong July delivery report, leaving investors to weigh whether the current price level offers a buying opportunity or signals more downside.
Deliveries Surge, But Stock Lags
Nio delivered 35,934 vehicles in July, a 71% year-over-year increase. This brings year-to-date deliveries to 227,057, up 68% from the same period last year. The flagship Nio brand contributed 20,008 units, while the Onvo and Firefly sub-brands delivered 10,155 and 5,771 vehicles, respectively. The ES8 model has achieved cumulative sales of 130,000 units in just 305 days since its launch.
The company also introduced the ES8 Five-Seat Version in July and is ramping up production of the ES9, priced between $69,000 and $87,000. These product launches are part of Nio's strategy to capture a broader share of the premium EV market.
Financial Outlook Improves
Nio's second-quarter deliveries rose 49.4% to 107,658 units, underscoring sustained demand. Analysts expect revenue to have grown 75% year-over-year to CNY 33.28 billion in Q2, with third-quarter revenue projected at CNY 36.33 billion. Full-year revenue is estimated at CNY 135.69 billion.
Despite an ongoing price war in China, Nio's gross margins have improved markedly. Vehicle margin reached 18.8% in the last quarter, up from 10.2% a year earlier, while total gross margin climbed to 19% from 7.6%. Although the company reported a net loss in Q2, management achieved a net profit of over $40 million in Q4 and aims for non-GAAP profitability this year.
Analyst Sentiment and Technical Setup
MarketBeat data shows 14 analysts covering Nio, with two sell ratings and the rest at hold or buy. The most optimistic target is $8.50, implying an 85% upside from current levels. However, the stock's technical picture remains challenging.
On the daily chart, Nio has fallen below all major moving averages, indicating bearish control. Yet, a potential double-bottom pattern is forming at $4.45, a level that held in February and July. If this support holds, the stock could rebound toward the next resistance at $5.22, about 12% above current prices. A break below $4.45 would likely trigger further declines, possibly toward the psychological $4.00 mark.
Investors may also be watching broader EV market trends, as Tesla's recent struggles and competitive pressures from Chinese rivals like Xpeng continue to influence sentiment. Additionally, other tech stocks facing similar support tests highlight the volatile environment for growth equities.
For now, Nio's valuation hinges on its ability to sustain delivery growth and achieve profitability. The upcoming earnings report will be crucial in determining whether the stock can hold its support or break down further.
