IREN shares have climbed over 7.5% in premarket trading, reaching $43.3, as a wave of positive news in the neocloud sector lifts investor sentiment. The stock is now nearly 50% above its June 29 low, reflecting renewed optimism about the company's AI infrastructure ambitions.
Neocloud tailwinds
Several developments have bolstered the neocloud industry this week. Nvidia, a major shareholder in IREN, announced a $500 billion financing initiative with BlackRock and Blackstone to fund AI companies. This deal effectively turns Nvidia's chips into a new asset class, potentially easing capital constraints for firms like IREN that require billions to scale their AI operations.
Demand for neocloud services continues to surge. Riot Platforms recently signed a $9 billion agreement with Anthropic, while CoreWeave, the industry's largest player, reported second-quarter revenue of $2.57 billion, up from $1.2 billion a year earlier. CoreWeave's backlog also swelled to $104 billion, underscoring robust appetite for AI compute. Goldman Sachs has also raised its outlook on Nebius, projecting annual EBITDA of $30 billion by 2030.
IREN's growth trajectory
IREN has secured $2.8 billion in contracts with AI developers including Perplexity, Figure AI, Together AI, and Fluidstack. Management has consequently raised its annual recurring revenue target to over $4 billion. The company is set to report its fiscal second-quarter results later this month, with analysts expecting revenue to decline 26% year-over-year to $139 million, reflecting its pivot away from Bitcoin mining.
For the full year, revenue is projected to rise from $510 million last year to $722 million, and then jump to $3 billion next year, aided by a $9.3 billion deal with Microsoft.
Challenges ahead
Despite the positive momentum, IREN faces significant headwinds. Depreciation and amortization are climbing sharply. CoreWeave's D&A reached $1.3 billion in its latest quarter, a large chunk of its $2.5 billion revenue, while IREN's D&A hit $121 million in the first quarter. These costs could pressure margins as the company scales.
Competition is intensifying as more Bitcoin miners, including MARA Holdings, Cipher Mining, and Core Scientific, enter the neocloud space. Riot Platforms' Anthropic deal is a prime example of this trend. Additionally, rising memory and chip prices are increasing the cost of doing business, forcing IREN to raise capital. The company's short interest stands at 26%, reflecting bearish sentiment among some investors.
Technical outlook
On the weekly chart, IREN shares have found support at $29, which aligns with the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level. A doji candlestick pattern formed two weeks ago, often a bullish reversal signal. The stock remains above the lower boundary of Andrew's pitchfork tool, suggesting further upside potential. If the rebound continues, the next target could be the psychological $50 level.
Investors will be watching the upcoming earnings report for signs that IREN can execute on its ambitious growth plans while managing costs and competition.
