The cryptocurrency market is experiencing a broad rally today, with Bitcoin climbing to $63,000 after dipping to $59,000 over the weekend. The move comes despite a broader retreat in global equities, with major indices such as Japan's Nikkei 225, Germany's DAX, Hong Kong's Hang Seng, China's Shanghai Composite, and Australia's ASX 200 all falling by more than 0.80%.
Leading the altcoin charge are AI-focused tokens, with Audiera surging over 50%, while privacy coins like Zcash and Dash gained 14% and 10%, respectively. Other notable performers include Near Protocol, Worldcoin, and Bittensor, each rising more than 10%.
Strategy Hints at Bitcoin Buying
The primary catalyst for today's rally appears to be a cryptic post from Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), suggesting the company may have resumed Bitcoin purchases. In a social media post, Saylor stated it was a good time to go buying, fueling speculation that the firm added to its holdings last week.
This would mark a notable shift after two consecutive weeks of inactivity, including a week when Strategy sold 35 coins. The company is expected to release an official update on its Bitcoin holdings later today. Strategy currently holds 843,706 BTC, valued at over $53 billion, with a total cost basis of $63 billion—implying an unrealized loss of more than $10 billion.
Saylor has repeatedly signaled the company's long-term commitment to accumulating Bitcoin, funded through the issuance of common and preferred shares, which dilutes existing shareholders. A renewed buying spree could reignite investor confidence, particularly after concerns that the firm might be capitulating.
AI Tokens Rally Ahead of SpaceX IPO
The rally in AI-related tokens is being driven by anticipation of SpaceX's upcoming initial public offering. Elon Musk's SpaceX sits at the intersection of space technology and artificial intelligence, partly due to its ownership of xAI. Investors are rotating into AI-focused crypto projects such as Audiera, Humanity, NEAR Protocol, Worldcoin, and Bittensor.
These projects have distinct AI credentials: Worldcoin and Humanity focus on human verification, NEAR Protocol has positioned itself as a layer-1 network for AI development and runs Near AI for AI agents, while Bittensor offers a decentralized AI development platform.
Potential Dead-Cat Bounce
Despite the upbeat sentiment, some analysts caution that the current rally may be a dead-cat bounce—a temporary recovery within a broader downtrend. Bitcoin's price found support at the psychologically important $60,000 level, which also marked the lowest point for the year. However, headwinds remain, including stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs data that has revived fears of further Federal Reserve interest rate hikes.
Investors are advised to exercise caution, as the sustainability of this rebound is uncertain. The broader market context, including ongoing equity weakness and macroeconomic pressures, suggests that the rally could be short-lived.
