XRP traded close to $1.49 on Thursday, even as the XRP Ledger gained a foothold in Brazil's regulated financial plumbing. The gap between adoption news and token performance has rarely been wider.
CSD BR, the Brazilian infrastructure operator responsible for registration, securities depository and settlement services, oversees more than 22 trillion reais in registered assets, equivalent to roughly $4 trillion. It has started recording ownership of selected BTG Pactual investment funds on XRPL as a secondary record.
What the $4 trillion headline actually means
The scale of CSD BR's asset base is not migrating to the blockchain. Its existing database remains the official record for registration, custody and settlement. The initial rollout covers selected fund records rather than the operator's entire book, and the $4 trillion is not being transferred on-chain.
Approved institutions can read the blockchain copy and reconcile it against CSD BR's own database. That could reduce back-office reconciliation work while preserving existing regulatory controls. It is an infrastructure use case, not a capital inflow into XRP.
Veteran trader Peter Brandt framed the investment question bluntly in comments to Cointelegraph this week: "Just because something is transactional, that doesn't mean automatically that it must be more valuable."
ETF demand is real but price is not responding
Institutional appetite for regulated XRP exposure is not theoretical. US spot XRP ETFs attracted another $3.96 million on Monday after pulling in $22.65 million the previous Friday, extending a run of steady inflows. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart has described XRP ETF flows as "surprisingly resilient," particularly given the token's weak price response.
That leaves two distinct bullish signals running in parallel: investors are buying regulated XRP exposure, and financial institutions are beginning to use XRPL for live market infrastructure. Yet the token remains roughly 10% below its September 23 intraday high of $1.6556.
Macro conditions are working against risk assets
US Treasury yields have climbed to multi-decade highs, making government bonds more attractive and raising the bar for speculative assets. K33 Research analyst Vetle Lunde told The Block that surging yields were "pushing investors away from risk," with crypto constrained even as softer inflation reduced expectations for an immediate Federal Reserve hike.
Structurally, using XRPL does not translate one-for-one into purchases of XRP. Cyclically, any incremental demand is competing against a macro backdrop that rewards holders of yielding assets.
Price action reflects that tension. XRP has repeatedly failed to sustain moves through the $1.55 to $1.60 region, while buyers have tried to defend the $1.45 to $1.50 area. The question now is whether adoption generates enough marginal demand to reprice the token itself.
