Sui's native token, SUI, has rebounded 1.4% in the last 24 hours, but the broader trend remains bearish. Over the past week, the asset has shed nearly 5%, making it one of the weakest performers among the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. The recent bounce comes amid a sharp increase in trading volume, which jumped 140% to $230 million—roughly 9% of its circulating market cap—suggesting heightened volatility and selling pressure.

Since the start of 2026, SUI has lost about 52% of its value. While the broader altcoin market has faced headwinds, Sui's specific challenges include declining application activity and limited institutional adoption, which have compounded the negative sentiment.

Technical strength not translating into adoption

Sui was built as a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain, designed to handle large transaction volumes with greater throughput than established rivals like Ethereum and Solana. However, technical capability has not yet translated into widespread developer interest or sustained user engagement. The network continues to face questions about its ability to attract projects that offer real-world utility and generate meaningful revenue.

Weak application revenue is a deterrent for developers, as products built on Sui may struggle to achieve financial sustainability without external funding or token incentives. Institutional interest has also remained tepid, with Sui failing to establish a strong foothold among major financial institutions and Wall Street firms, unlike some competing blockchains.

DEX activity collapses

On-chain data reveals a dramatic contraction in Sui's decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem. Monthly decentralized exchange (DEX) volume has plummeted from a peak of $22 billion in October 2025 to approximately $886 million in July. Based on activity so far in August, projections suggest DEX volume could fall to around $670 million for the month—a further 24% decline from July.

This extended contraction indicates that users are executing fewer trades through applications built on Sui. Falling DEX volume reduces fee revenue for protocols and weakens demand for the network's native token. Fees generated by Sui-based applications recently dropped below $700,000 for the first time since July 2024, a key metric of network demand and developer revenue.

Persistently low fees make it difficult for projects to cover operating costs and sustain development without relying on outside capital or token incentives. There has been some improvement in August, with fees surpassing $1 million in the first half of the month, following Sui's partnership with Hadron, Tether's tokenization platform. The integration allows tokenized assets supported by Hadron to be traded and transferred on the Sui blockchain, offering a potential avenue for renewed activity.

Technical outlook: support at $0.65

SUI's daily chart shows that downside pressure is intensifying after the token broke below the critical $0.65 support level. The price has been moving within a descending channel, marked by lower highs and lower lows. The breakdown, accompanied by a sharp increase in trading volume, strengthens the bearish pattern.

If sellers maintain control below $0.65, SUI could fall toward the next major support at $0.55, representing a potential decline of approximately 15% from the former support zone. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has also dropped below 40, producing a bearish momentum signal. While the token could eventually approach oversold conditions if the decline continues, the current trend remains negative.

To weaken the bearish outlook, SUI would need to reclaim $0.65 and break above the descending channel. Until then, poor market conditions and declining ecosystem activity leave the token vulnerable to further losses. For context, other assets have shown resilience in similar situations—such as SHIB's recent rebound and gold's recovery above $4,350—but Sui's fundamentals remain under pressure.
