Nvidia shares have been locked in a tight trading band over the past two weeks, closing last week at $225, slightly below the year-to-date peak of $236. This period of consolidation is about to face a significant test, with Micron Technology scheduled to report its quarterly results on Wednesday and reports suggesting China may permit leading domestic firms to purchase advanced Nvidia chips.
Micron Earnings Loom as a Major Catalyst
Micron's earnings release is a critical event for Nvidia investors because Micron serves as a key supplier, contributing a meaningful share of Nvidia's sales. Moreover, Micron is a leading player in the artificial intelligence sector, supplying high-bandwidth memory that is indispensable for data centers. Its financial performance will therefore offer valuable insight into whether the AI industry's growth trajectory remains intact.
Analyst expectations for Micron are elevated, with consensus estimates pointing to a revenue surge of more than 320% in the latest quarter, reaching over $51 billion—a figure that would dwarf the company's entire revenue from the previous fiscal year. Management has also issued ambitious margin guidance, targeting an 86% gross margin, and there is speculation that actual results could exceed this target.
China May Greenlight Advanced Chip Purchases
Nvidia shares are also responding to reports that China is considering allowing major technology companies such as Alibaba and ByteDance to acquire some of Nvidia's most advanced chips. According to Reuters, which cited sources familiar with the discussions, China's Ministry of Information Technology has requested these companies to disclose their plans to purchase RTX Pro 5500 chips. Officials reportedly believe the U.S. government will approve these transactions, particularly following last week's meeting between Xi Jinping and President Trump.
China represents one of the largest markets for GPUs and other technology products, but Nvidia has struggled to conduct substantial business there due to ongoing U.S.-China tensions. Consequently, management has refrained from including its China business in forward guidance.
Regulatory Pressure and Growth Outlook
Nvidia is also navigating growing calls for AI industry regulation. CEO Jensen Huang has emerged as a vocal opponent of such measures, arguing that AI companies should self-regulate. His stance likely stems from concerns that any slowdown in AI spending would significantly impact Nvidia's business. Despite these headwinds, analysts remain optimistic about the company's growth prospects, with average estimates projecting annual revenue of $411 billion this year and $682 billion next year.
Technical Analysis Points to Bearish Risks
From a technical perspective, Nvidia's stock may be on the verge of a bearish breakout. The shares have formed a diamond reversal pattern, a formation that often precedes a price retreat. The MACD indicator has also produced a bearish crossover and is trending downward, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has developed a descending channel.
These technical signals suggest the stock could decline in the coming days, potentially testing the psychological support level of $200. Conversely, a move above the all-time high of $236 would indicate renewed upward momentum.
