Strategy (MSTR) shares have mounted a sharp recovery this week, climbing to a premarket high of $115.65—its strongest level since late June and roughly 40% above the year's trough. The move tracks a decisive breakout in Bitcoin, which pushed past the key $72,000 resistance level for the first time in over a month. The YieldMax MSTR Option Income Strategy ETF (MSTY) also rebounded, trading near $13.95, up from its 2025 low of $11.50.
Catalysts align for Bitcoin and MSTR
Bitcoin's rally has been fueled by a confluence of factors. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index has swung from extreme fear (25) to greed (61) in a matter of months, a shift that historically precedes sustained upward momentum. After a prolonged consolidation, BTC broke out to $72,396, its highest since June 1, and is now testing its 200-day exponential moving average (EMA)—a level that, if cleared, could open the door to further gains.
Institutional demand has been a key driver. Spot Bitcoin ETFs added over $500 million in assets on Wednesday alone, bringing monthly inflows to more than $1.4 billion. These funds now manage over $84 billion in total assets, underscoring the growing institutional appetite for digital assets. The resumption of ETF inflows has been a recurring theme in recent weeks, and the latest surge suggests that momentum is accelerating.
Macro tailwinds are also at play. The US dollar index (DXY) has slid from $101.80 in June to $98.57, its lowest since May 14. Bitcoin and the dollar have historically moved in opposite directions, and the weaker greenback is providing additional support.
MSTR's Bitcoin bet
As the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, Strategy stands to benefit disproportionately from a sustained rally. The company holds 840,447 BTC, currently valued at over $60.5 billion. A continued climb in Bitcoin would directly boost the value of MSTR's treasury and, by extension, its stock price.
However, the stock faces notable headwinds. On the technical side, MSTR has formed a bearish flag pattern—a structure that often precedes a breakdown. The stock has yet to reclaim its June low of $115, a level that now serves as resistance. A decisive move above that, coupled with a close above the 200-day EMA, would be needed to confirm a bullish reversal.
Dilution and other risks
Perhaps the most pressing concern is the company's aggressive share issuance. Strategy has been raising capital by issuing new MSTR shares, boosting its outstanding count from 93 million in 2022 to 351 million today. On Monday, the company revealed it had increased its USD reserves by $150 million, bringing total cash reserves to $4.8 billion. This dilution is a double-edged sword: it provides liquidity for further Bitcoin purchases and to fund dividends on its preferred stock (STRC), but it also pressures the stock price by increasing supply.
Moreover, the company may need to raise additional capital to repurchase STRC shares and maintain its dividend obligations. If Bitcoin's rally stalls, the value of its holdings could decline, putting further strain on the balance sheet.
Investors should also consider the broader market context. While ETF inflows have been strong for other assets, the crypto market remains volatile. A pullback in Bitcoin could quickly reverse MSTR's gains, as seen earlier this year.
Outlook
For now, the stars seem aligned for MSTR: Bitcoin is breaking out, ETF inflows are surging, and the dollar is weakening. But the stock's reliance on continued Bitcoin appreciation, combined with ongoing dilution, makes it a high-risk, high-reward play. Traders will be watching the $115 resistance and the 200-day EMA for clues about the next leg.
