Duolingo (NASDAQ: DUOL) shares have climbed back to their highest level since January, rallying 77% from the year's low to around $162. However, technical analysis suggests the stock may be nearing a reversal point, even as some analysts see further upside.
Transition from growth to value
The language-learning platform is navigating a significant shift as AI tools disrupt its core business. Management has pivoted to prioritize user growth, targeting an increase in monthly active users from 58.7 million to 100 million over the coming years. To achieve this, Duolingo is expanding into new subjects like chess and math, while ramping up marketing spend.
These investments have weighed on profitability. The company's net profit margin contracted to 11.8% from 17.8% a year earlier. In the most recent quarter, paid subscribers grew 17% year-over-year to 12.7 million, and revenue rose 18% to $298 million. However, net income fell 26% to just over $33 million.
Analysts expect growth to continue, with Q3 revenue projected to rise 11.45% to $302 million. For the full year, consensus estimates point to a 16% revenue increase to $1.22 billion, followed by 13% growth next year. These figures imply a deceleration, marking Duolingo's transition from a high-growth story to a more mature, value-oriented profile.
As a result, the forward price-to-earnings ratio has dropped to 22, in line with the S&P 500, a stark contrast to its historical premium. This re-rating reflects the market's adjustment to slower growth expectations.
Analyst views remain mixed
Evercore analysts have reiterated a bullish stance, setting a price target of $210, implying roughly 35% upside from current levels. In contrast, JPMorgan's Bryan Smilek recently raised his target from $125 to $135, still below the current trading price. The divergence highlights uncertainty about Duolingo's ability to sustain growth while managing AI-related headwinds.
For context, Duolingo's recent surge has been partly attributed to optimism around AI-driven engagement, but the company's own investments in AI tools may also be cannibalizing its traditional course offerings.
Technical warning signs
From a technical perspective, DUOL stock is forming a rising broadening wedge pattern, a classic bearish reversal signal. This pattern consists of two ascending and diverging trendlines, indicating increasing volatility and potential exhaustion. Additionally, the Percentage Price Oscillator (PPO) has risen sharply, and the stock remains above its 100-day exponential moving average—both bullish indicators. However, the combination of the wedge and a possible abandoned baby candlestick pattern suggests a pullback could be imminent.
If the stock reverses, the first key support level is around $134, a level that previously acted as resistance. A break above the upper trendline of the wedge, however, would negate the bearish setup and open the door to further gains.
Investors should weigh these technical signals against the company's fundamental transition. While Duolingo's user growth strategy may pay off long-term, the near-term chart suggests caution. As always, analyst opinions remain split on the stock's direction, and market conditions can change rapidly.
