Coherent (COHR) has seen its share price retreat significantly from its yearly peak, even as the artificial intelligence boom continues to drive demand for optical components. The stock currently trades around $239, a 45% drop from its high, while rival Lumentum has surged. This divergence comes as reports surface that Marvell Technology is exploring a takeover of Lumentum, a move that could have implications for Coherent.
Potential Marvell-Lumentum Deal Could Benefit Coherent
Marvell, with a market capitalization exceeding $220 billion, is reportedly in talks to acquire Lumentum, which is valued at over $80 billion. Such a deal would likely command a substantial premium, making it one of the largest mergers in the optical networking sector. Neither company has confirmed the discussions, but investors are already assessing the potential impact on competitors like Coherent.
If the acquisition proceeds, it could be bullish for Coherent. Both companies operate in the same space, producing lasers, optical transceivers, and networking components that enable high-speed data transmission using light. The key difference is that Coherent has a broader, vertically integrated portfolio, while Lumentum focuses on specialized optical components and high-performance lasers. Notably, Lumentum previously attempted to acquire Coherent, underscoring their competitive overlap.
Depending on the premium Marvell pays for Lumentum, investors may use that valuation as a benchmark for Coherent. Currently, Coherent trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 25, compared to Lumentum's 40, suggesting Coherent is the cheaper option. Additionally, Lumentum recently stated that its products are sold out through 2029, which could push customers to Coherent for optical solutions.
Coherent's Business Fundamentals Remain Strong
Coherent's latest quarterly results showed revenue growth of 34% year-over-year, reaching $2.05 billion, with gross margin expanding to 38.5%. Net earnings jumped to over $241 million. The company expects this momentum to continue, projecting first-quarter revenue of $2.3 billion, a 45% increase, with earnings per share of $1.97. For the full fiscal year, Coherent anticipates revenue of $10.6 billion, followed by $14.9 billion in the next year.
Technical Warning: Death Cross Formation
Despite the positive fundamentals, technical analysis suggests Coherent stock may be on the verge of a bearish signal. The 50-day and 200-day exponential moving averages are approaching a crossover, known as a death cross. If this pattern forms, it could trigger further downside, potentially pushing the stock toward the psychological support level of $200.
The death cross risk is amplified by broader concerns about a potential bubble in AI-related stocks. If investor sentiment shifts, Coherent could face additional selling pressure, even as the company's operational performance remains solid.
Investors will be watching closely to see how the Marvell-Lumentum situation unfolds and whether Coherent can maintain its growth trajectory amid technical headwinds.
