Zcash (ZEC) has rallied more than 51% over the past seven days, trading near $1,244 as of Sept. 10, propelled by sustained inflows into Grayscale's Zcash ETF (ZCSH). The digital asset has climbed from roughly $814 on Sept. 3 to above $1,200 within three days, and has since held most of those gains despite brief pullbacks toward $1,100–$1,150.
According to CoinGecko, ZEC is up 51.3% in the last week, 60.3% over 14 days, and 153% over the past month. The recent surge has brought the price back to the $1,250 area, a level that previously capped upside attempts.
Grayscale ETF as the Primary Catalyst
Grayscale's Zcash ETF has emerged as the main driver behind the rally. ZCSH, which began trading on NYSE Arca on Aug. 25, reported $532.9 million in assets under management as of Sept. 8, according to Grayscale's fund data. The fund held 464,514.8551 ZEC on that date, reaching the $500 million milestone just two weeks after its listing.
Grayscale has recorded more than $70 million in cumulative inflows since launch, and options on the fund began trading on NYSE Arca on Sept. 8. A portion of the fund's assets came from DCG International Investments, which, according to a Sept. 8 SEC filing, contributed 85,705.32563297 ZEC (worth roughly $100 million) through an authorized participant.
Institutional interest extends beyond ZCSH. Cypherpunk Technologies held 323,394.38 ZEC as of Aug. 18, representing about 1.92% of circulating supply. The company expanded its Zcash exposure in August through a $33.33 million equity transaction with Winklevoss Capital, launching a US-based mining operation with 4.2 GSol/s of Equihash computing power—roughly 18% of the network's hashrate at launch. Cypherpunk aims to eventually hold 5% of ZEC supply, noting that about 43,800 ZEC are awarded to miners monthly.
Short Liquidations Amplify the Move
The initial phase of the rally was accelerated by short liquidations. Data from Sharpe Terminal shows ZEC short liquidations reached $13.51 million on Sept. 4 and $27.98 million on Sept. 6 across tracked exchanges. Forced buybacks as the price moved through $1,000 and later $1,200 added upward pressure.
Technical Analysis: Bullish Setup, but Stretched
On the daily chart, ZEC is trading near $1,240 after hitting an intraday high of $1,256.80. The 20-day exponential moving average (EMA) has climbed to $963.65, while the 50-day EMA stands at $766.59. The 100-day and 200-day averages are lower at $639.54 and $526.63, respectively. All four EMAs are rising, with the shorter averages above the longer ones, confirming a bullish trend across multiple timeframes.
However, price is nearly $280 above the 20-day EMA, indicating the rally may be overextended. A pullback toward the 20-day EMA is possible if buyers fail to hold the breakout. The Parabolic SAR sits below ZEC at $917.58 and continues to rise, supporting the uptrend without a bearish reversal signal.
A daily close above $1,280 would take ZEC past recent highs and could open a move toward $1,400. If that level is cleared, $1,500 becomes the next major psychological target, roughly 21% above the current price.
On the 4-hour chart, Aroon Up stands at 71.43% while Aroon Down is at 0%, indicating that short-term momentum still favors buyers. Aroon Up has eased from 100% as ZEC consolidates near $1,240, suggesting some loss of momentum. A move through $1,280 with Aroon Up returning toward 100% would signal fresh highs and renewed momentum. Conversely, a drop below $1,200 followed by $1,150 would weaken the current structure.
On-balance volume (OBV) remains near 2.49 million after climbing sharply during the late-August and early-September breakouts. OBV staying elevated while ZEC consolidates suggests the rally has not been accompanied by heavy selling. If OBV begins to fall while ZEC remains below $1,280, it would indicate increasing selling pressure during consolidation.
For now, price holding near highs with elevated OBV supports another attempt at the $1,250–$1,280 resistance zone. If ZEC falls below $1,150, it could retest $1,100, with further downside toward $1,000 and the rising 20-day EMA at $963.65.
Investors are also watching broader crypto market dynamics, including overbought conditions that could trigger a short-term correction. Meanwhile, institutional interest in privacy coins remains a key theme, as seen in other AI-driven rallies and tech sector momentum.
