Soybean futures are trading in a narrow band, holding above a months-long bullish trendline, as market participants weigh a mix of supportive fundamentals and geopolitical uncertainties. The commodity has seen a steep uptrend over recent weeks, but momentum has stalled as investors await fresh catalysts.

Supply and demand dynamics

The supply/demand outlook remains constructive, underpinned by robust Chinese demand and record-high US diesel prices, which boost the appeal of soybean oil for biofuel production. According to the latest crop progress report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), 62% of the US soybean crop had dropped leaves by late last week, a natural sign of harvest readiness. Harvest was 12% complete, while condition ratings held steady at 58% good/excellent.

Brent Crude Surges Past $106 as Middle East and Russia Risks Intensify
Oil prices climbed about 2% on Monday as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine conflict kept supply risks elevated. Brent crude traded above $106, while WTI approached $94.

Export inspections for the week ending September 17 totaled 759,193 metric tonnes, up 11.6% from the prior week and 34.2% higher than the same period last year. Year-to-date shipments are 1.8% above last year's pace, with China as the leading destination.

Geopolitical and energy market influences

Geopolitical factors are adding to the choppiness in soybean trade. As a key biofuel feedstock, soybean demand often moves in tandem with crude oil prices. Persistent disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz have kept oil prices elevated, though Brent has eased in recent sessions. Meanwhile, US diesel prices hit a record $6.50 per gallon at the start of the week, compared to $3.70 a year ago, further supporting soybean crushing demand.

Investors are also monitoring the US-Iran peace talks at the United Nations and President Xi Jinping's upcoming state visit to the US, which could influence trade relations and demand expectations. Earlier this month, the US Environmental Protection Agency announced the reallocation of excess volumes following small refinery exemptions, adding another layer of complexity to the biofuel demand picture.

Technical outlook

On the daily chart, soybean futures have been trading above both the 25-day and 50-day exponential moving averages, with a bullish golden cross in place since mid-July. The long-term trendline continues to provide support, but buyers have lacked the momentum to test the three-year high reached two weeks ago. The relative strength index (RSI) sits at 59, suggesting neutral momentum.

The key range to watch is between resistance at $13.35 and support at $12.96. A pullback could see bears target $12.80, while a breakout above $13.35 would open the door to a fresh three-year high at $13.45.

At the time of writing, CBOT soybean futures were trading at $13.18 per bushel, down 0.51% on the day, but on track for a second consecutive weekly gain.
