Ethereum (ETH) is trading near the critical $2,550 resistance level, with technical indicators and derivatives data suggesting that bulls are gaining traction. After a modest 1.5% decline last week, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization has climbed back above $2,500, positioning itself for a potential breakout that could target the psychological $3,000 mark.
Data from CoinGlass shows that Ethereum futures volume surged to $36.45 billion over the past 24 hours, a 74% increase, and is now 14 times higher than the $2.48 billion in spot market volume. Open interest stands at $32.86 billion, indicating substantial capital remains committed to the market. The long-to-short ratio is 1.019, slightly favoring long positions, while the funding rate of 0.0070% shows that longs are paying shorts, a sign of bullish sentiment.
Spot Ethereum ETFs also provided a tailwind, recording a net inflow of $196.90 million last week. The inflows were led by a $216.40 million surge on Friday, with additional gains on Wednesday ($34.70 million) and Monday (muted). However, Tuesday and Thursday saw outflows of $24.30 million and $29.90 million, respectively. For Ethereum to sustain its rally, ETF demand will need to remain robust.
From a technical perspective, Ethereum is trading above its 50-day EMA at $2,264, its 200-day EMA at $2,203, and its 100-day EMA at $2,146. The clustering of these moving averages below the current price suggests that buyers are defending the structure. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is near 60, reflecting improving momentum without being overbought. However, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) remains negative, indicating that the latest recovery still lacks strong upside conviction.
A decisive move above $2,550 could open the door to $3,000, a level that has been a key psychological barrier. If Ethereum faces rejection at $2,550, the 50-day EMA near $2,264 serves as the first support, followed by the 200-day EMA at $2,203 and the 100-day EMA at $2,146. Losing these levels would increase the risk of a decline toward the structural support at $2,000. A sustained breakdown below $1,385 would seriously weaken Ethereum's broader bullish structure.
Market participants are also watching broader crypto dynamics. Bitcoin is consolidating above its major daily moving averages, providing a stable backdrop for Ethereum. However, as noted in recent analysis of Ethereum's $2.5K ceiling, ETF inflows alone may not be enough to break resistance ahead of key economic data. Similarly, the recent pullback in major cryptocurrencies highlights the market's sensitivity to macro factors.
Holding above $2,500 could strengthen short-term sentiment and encourage traders to target higher resistance levels. However, a rally driven primarily by futures positioning could fade quickly if funding costs rise or broader market sentiment deteriorates. As noted in Ethereum's dip below $2,500, the market remains at a crossroads, with bulls needing sustained spot demand to make the advance durable.
Investors will be watching whether Ethereum can maintain its position above $2,500 and eventually break through $2,550. The combination of rising futures activity, positive ETF flows, and technical support suggests that the path of least resistance may be upward, but confirmation is needed.
