Energy Transfer (ET) has surged to an all-time high, extending its remarkable rally as energy prices remain elevated and the company prepares for a significant corporate move. The stock has climbed more than 26% over the past 12 months and is up 31% year-to-date, reflecting strong operational performance and favorable market conditions.
Texas Stock Exchange move
According to the Wall Street Journal, Energy Transfer is planning to transfer its listing from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to the Texas Stock Exchange (TXSE). This would make it the largest company to defect to the upstart exchange, which is backed by major financial institutions including BlackRock, Citadel Securities, Charles Schwab, and Citigroup. Notably, Kelcy Warren, Energy Transfer's executive chairman, holds a 30% stake in the TXSE.
The move underscores a growing trend of companies seeking alternatives to the traditional New York exchanges, with Texas emerging as a hub for energy and financial innovation. For Energy Transfer, the relocation aligns with its operational footprint and could enhance its visibility among regional investors.
Business fundamentals remain strong
Energy Transfer operates the largest intrastate pipeline system in the United States, providing critical logistics for natural gas, crude oil, and refined products. Its midstream services include gathering, compression, treating, dehydration, and processing. The company is benefiting from record U.S. oil production, which now exceeds 13 million barrels per day, and increased export volumes amid geopolitical tensions, such as the U.S.-Iran conflict.
In the second quarter, Energy Transfer reported revenue of $34.3 billion, bringing first-half revenue to $62.1 billion. Net income surged to $2.53 billion, up from $1.4 billion in the same period last year. This robust cash flow has enabled the company to reduce its debt, with interest expenses totaling $934 million in the latest quarter and $1.88 billion in the first half.
Analysts project full-year revenue to jump 44% to $122 billion, positioning Energy Transfer as one of the top dividend-paying stocks in the market. The company's consistent performance has also made it a favorite among income-focused investors, as highlighted in a recent balanced income portfolio analysis.
Technical outlook points higher
From a technical perspective, Energy Transfer's weekly chart shows a strong bullish trend, with the stock breaking above the key resistance level of $20.30, its May high. The price has also moved above the upper boundary of an ascending triangle pattern, and the Average Directional Index (ADX) has risen to 40, indicating strong trend momentum.
Given these signals, the stock is likely to continue its upward trajectory, with the next target around $25. A drop below $20.30 would invalidate the bullish setup, but current fundamentals and market conditions suggest further upside.
Energy Transfer's success is part of a broader energy sector rally, with other players like Bloom Energy also benefiting from increased power demand. However, investors should remain mindful of potential volatility in energy prices and geopolitical developments.
