Trump Media & Technology Group's shares have been under heavy selling pressure this month, with DJT falling to $8—its lowest level since July 8 and roughly 40% below its start-of-year price. The continued decline raises the possibility that the stock could soon trade below $5, the threshold commonly used to define a penny stock.
Revenue and losses paint a grim picture
The company's latest quarterly report showed revenue of just $1.7 million, a paltry figure for a firm that has been operating for five years. Meanwhile, the net loss for the quarter exceeded $238 million. These numbers underscore the fundamental challenges facing the business.
User engagement is also deteriorating. According to SimilarWeb, traffic to Truth Social's website fell by 20% in July to just 15 million visits. This decline coincides with a drop in President Trump's approval rating, which has reached record lows. Polls indicate waning support among key demographics, including some MAGA voters, as well as criticism from both neoconservatives and anti-war Republicans over foreign policy decisions.
Political and regulatory risks loom
Another significant risk is the potential for a Democratic-controlled Congress to launch investigations into Trump Media. A focal point could be the recently launched Truth API, a service that provides early access to President Trump's posts for a monthly fee of $60,000 to $100,000. The company says it has already signed about 10 clients in the trading industry. Democrats may scrutinize whether this service violates any laws. Even if the service proves successful, its revenue potential is limited by the fact that Trump's presidential term ends in two years.
Crypto ventures underperform
Trump Media's foray into cryptocurrency has also failed to gain traction. Plans to launch several crypto ETFs in partnership with Crypto.com were shelved due to the ongoing crypto winter. The company's investment in Bitcoin has also soured, as the cryptocurrency has fallen from its record high of $126,300 to around $64,000. This has reduced the value of its 12,062 Bitcoin holdings from over $1.5 billion to roughly $771 million. While these holdings remain substantial, they are offset by the company's massive operating losses, raising the possibility that Trump Media may need to issue new shares to raise capital.
Technical indicators suggest further downside
From a technical perspective, DJT stock has formed a rising wedge pattern—a bearish signal that often precedes a breakdown. The stock has also reached a key pivot level on the Murrey Math Lines. In the long term, the most likely scenario is a drop to the support level of $6.25, followed by the extreme oversold level of $4.65.
Given these fundamental and technical headwinds, the path to penny stock status appears increasingly plausible. Investors should monitor the company's ability to generate sustainable revenue and manage its cash burn.
