The cryptocurrency market is experiencing a sharp downturn today, with Bitcoin and most major altcoins trading in the red. After reaching $87,000 earlier this week, Bitcoin has retreated to $83,830, while Ethereum has slipped to $2,670. Among the hardest hit are Arbitrum, Pepe, Uniswap, and Official Trump, all of which have fallen by more than 11% in the last 24 hours.

Bond yields climb, pressuring risk assets

The primary catalyst for today's crypto sell-off is the ongoing surge in global bond yields. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury jumped to 5.1% on Wednesday, with the 2-year yield reaching 4.90% and the 30-year climbing to 5.4%. This upward pressure on yields is largely driven by rising crude oil prices, which have pushed gasoline and diesel costs higher. Diesel has hit a record high, and gasoline prices have risen by double digits since January.

Higher energy costs are fueling concerns that inflation will remain elevated, increasing the likelihood that the Federal Reserve will continue its rate-hiking cycle. The Fed has already raised rates by 0.25%, and market participants expect another hike later this year. Historically, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have underperformed during periods of rising interest rates, as seen in 2022 when Bitcoin fell to around $16,000 amid Fed tightening.

The impact of rising bond yields extends beyond crypto. Precious metals like gold and silver have also retreated, and stock futures are pointing lower, with Dow Jones futures down 142 points and S&P 500 futures down 25 points.

Profit-taking after a strong rally

Another factor behind today's decline is profit-taking. Many of the top laggards were among the best performers earlier this week. Arbitrum, for instance, has dropped 14% in the last 24 hours and is down 15% from its weekly high, after surging 263% from its August low, driven by the growth of Robinhood Chain. Similarly, Uniswap has fallen 13.78% to $9.25, after rallying 240% from its August lows, supported by the SEC's innovation exemption for tokenization.

Other altcoins like Worldcoin, Pepe, and Dogecoin, which had also risen by double digits from their August lows, are now experiencing similar pullbacks. This profit-taking is occurring as many coins have become overbought, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) for several of them exceeding 70.

What lies ahead for crypto prices?

Looking forward, there are two potential scenarios. The current retreat could be short-lived, leading to a bullish reversal, or it could mark the beginning of a new bearish trend. The most likely outcome, however, is that most coins will dip further before bouncing back as investors buy the dip.

As the bond market continues to influence risk assets, traders will be closely watching inflation data and Fed signals for clues about the next move in crypto prices.
