Zcash (ZEC) has climbed 2.8% over the past 24 hours, trading near $509 on August 18, extending its weekly gain to 3.4%. The move comes as users continue migrating funds into the newly introduced Ironwood shielded pool, which has attracted approximately $260 million worth of ZEC since its activation.
Data from CoinGecko shows ZEC rising from around $495 during the past day, briefly touching $520 before settling above $500. The token has been consolidating after a sharp decline earlier this year, and the recent uptick reflects renewed interest following the network upgrade.
Ironwood migration and security fix
Ironwood was activated on July 28 at block height 3,428,143, following the discovery of a critical vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool. Security researcher Taylor Hornby found the flaw on May 29, and the Zcash Open Development Lab coordinated an emergency response that patched the issue by June 2. The vulnerability could have allowed an attacker to create counterfeit ZEC without detection, though Shielded Labs assessed exploitation as unlikely.
The upgrade sealed the old Orchard pool to new deposits and internal transactions, while allowing funds to exit via the existing turnstile mechanism. This design prevents more ZEC from leaving Orchard than legitimately entered, enabling users to independently verify the integrity of the circulating supply. Ironwood also incorporates the corrected Orchard circuit, additional audits, formal verification, and quantum-recoverable notes under ZIP 2005.
The security issue had previously triggered a sharp repricing, with ZEC losing more than 50% after the bug was disclosed. At the time of Ironwood's activation, ZEC was trading near $475. The recent recovery has brought the token back above the $500 psychological level.
Price levels and technical outlook
On the daily chart, ZEC is trading around $509, with the Volume Profile Visible Range showing significant historical activity in the $400–$420 zone. That area has served as strong support during recent swings, with ZEC bouncing from around $400 in late June to approximately $570 in July. The daily Supertrend indicator currently places support near $447, keeping the bullish structure intact as long as price remains above it.
On the upside, ZEC first needs to clear the $516–$520 resistance zone, where the latest intraday rally stalled. A sustained move above that level would bring the July resistance area of $560–$580 back into focus. Conversely, failure to hold above $500 could expose the $480 support level, with deeper declines potentially targeting the daily Supertrend near $447 and the high-volume region around $400–$420.
The 4-hour chart presents a more cautious short-term picture. ZEC is trading just below the session's VWAP of $511.59, with the upper band at $513.11. The Stochastic RSI shows %K at 77.85 and %D at 87.50, with %K crossing below %D after both entered overbought territory, suggesting momentum may be easing. To push higher, ZEC would need to reclaim the $511–$513 VWAP area and then break $520. Holding above that level could open a path toward $540 and then the $560–$580 resistance. On the downside, losing $500 would weaken the immediate setup, with $480 as the next support before the daily Supertrend near $447.
The broader crypto market has seen mixed performance, with some assets like MORPHO climbing on record exchange outflows while others face resistance. Zcash's recent move aligns with a broader trend of privacy-focused coins gaining attention amid regulatory scrutiny. Investors are also watching macroeconomic signals, such as gold climbing on Fed pause bets, which could influence risk appetite across digital assets.
As ZEC navigates these technical levels, the successful migration to Ironwood and the resolution of the security vulnerability may provide a foundation for further upside. However, the token remains below its July highs, and traders will be watching whether it can sustain momentum above $520 to confirm a larger breakout.
