Uphold, a financial technology company specializing in on-chain finance, has introduced two automated trading strategies designed to bring institutional-grade, rules-based investing to retail crypto users. The new offering, called Autopilot, runs entirely within a user's Uphold account, eliminating the need for third-party bots or API keys.
At launch, customers can select between the Momentum Strategy and the Big10 Strategy. The Momentum Strategy invests across the ten largest crypto assets by market capitalization, excluding stablecoins, and uses momentum scoring to hold only those assets showing the strongest and most consistent upward trends. When momentum fades, the strategy shifts that portion of the portfolio into cash, aiming to avoid assets heading lower.
The Big10 Strategy provides full, always-invested exposure to the market's current leaders. It holds the ten largest digital assets by market cap, excluding stablecoins, weighted by market capitalization, and rebalances as the market changes.
According to Uphold CEO Simon McLoughlin, most crypto gains come from a handful of trades each year, and the Momentum Strategy is built to capture those moments without requiring users to make buy or sell decisions. "Decisions are driven by data rather than sentiment, using momentum investing, one of the longest-established approaches in finance," he said.
Uphold refined the Momentum Strategy using five years of real market data, including the 2022 crash, with input from its trading team. Independently backtested from 2021 to 2025, the strategy's returns averaged 32.9% annually. During market sell-offs, it moved holdings into cash, softening the market's worst decline by around 40%.
Nancy Beaton, President Consumer at Uphold, emphasized that these strategies answer the two key questions investors face: what to buy and when to trade. "They run automatically, so people don't have to watch the market or time it themselves," she said.
Security is a central feature. Because everything operates inside Uphold, there are no third-party bots or API keys, reducing the risk of unauthorized access. Users fund strategies in US dollars, with no lock-up periods and no withdrawal penalties, and can top up or withdraw at any time.
Autopilot strategies will also be available to Uphold's Enterprise customers, who access the platform via APIs, enabling them to launch digital asset services in months rather than years.
Uphold emphasizes that past performance is not indicative of future results, and Autopilot is not personalized investment advice. Users cannot alter the strategies and may opt out at any time. All trades are taxable events, and crypto-assets are volatile, with potential loss of value.
