Robinhood Markets (HOOD) shares climbed nearly 7% on Wednesday, driven by a confluence of positive catalysts including robust May operating data, bullish analyst revisions, and a strategic expansion into investment banking. The rally provides a lift to a stock that had fallen over 22% year-to-date prior to the move.

Strong May Metrics Fuel Analyst Optimism

Goldman Sachs analyst James Yaro raised his price target on Robinhood to $108 from $105 while maintaining a Buy rating, following the company's May operating update. The report showed activity across multiple segments exceeding expectations. Notably, Robinhood recorded a monthly high of 3.9 billion prediction-market contracts in May, a 22% increase from April and well above Goldman's forecast of 6% growth.

Traditional brokerage activity also remained robust. Equity trading volume rose 27% month-over-month, while options activity increased 3%, with both categories reaching their second-highest monthly levels on record. These metrics suggest retail investor engagement remains elevated despite ongoing market volatility and interest rate concerns.

Investment Banking Approval Opens New Revenue Stream

Adding to the positive sentiment, CEO Vlad Tenev announced Tuesday that Robinhood Securities received approval to operate as an underwriter, potentially unlocking a new revenue stream. The approval comes as Wall Street anticipates one of the busiest IPO periods in recent years, with high-profile companies like SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic expected to go public.

Robinhood has already benefited from a trend of allocating IPO shares directly to retail investors, offering eligible customers access to SpaceX shares. The ability to participate more directly in future IPOs could further strengthen Robinhood's appeal among retail investors and broaden its role in capital markets.

Prediction Markets Emerge as Key Growth Engine

While stock trading remains central to Robinhood's business, analysts increasingly view prediction markets as the company's next major growth opportunity. Cantor Fitzgerald reiterated its Overweight rating and raised its price target to $110 from $100, citing the company's Rothera joint venture with Susquehanna International Group. The venture operates a prediction-market exchange that allows users to trade contracts tied to real-world event outcomes.

Previously, Robinhood relied on third-party platforms such as Kalshi and ForecastEx. With Rothera, the company is routing event contracts through infrastructure it partially owns, enabling it to capture a larger share of the economics. Cantor estimates that Robinhood's 45% ownership stake in Rothera will help retain exchange-level revenues that previously flowed to external partners.

The brokerage raised its revenue forecasts for fiscal years 2026 through 2028 by approximately 3%, 6%, and 7% on a reported basis. After adjusting for Susquehanna's non-controlling interest, Cantor estimates the venture could boost Robinhood's revenue by roughly 2% in 2026, 3% in 2027, and 4% in 2028, while increasing earnings per share by around 2%, 3%, and 3%, respectively.

Cantor Fitzgerald values Robinhood at 27 times its projected 2027 adjusted EBITDA of $3.42 billion, incorporating a discounted cash flow analysis. Management has repeatedly highlighted prediction markets as a key strategic priority, with Tenev describing the segment as the fastest-growing business in Robinhood's history during the company's first-quarter earnings call, suggesting it could eventually support trillions of contracts annually.

Market Context

The rally in Robinhood shares comes amid a broader market environment where Wall Street demands proof of AI monetization and big banks post record earnings, highlighting the shifting dynamics in financial services. As Robinhood expands its offerings, investors will be watching closely to see if the company can sustain its growth trajectory and capitalize on emerging opportunities in prediction markets and investment banking.
