Energy midstream companies have enjoyed a strong year as oil and gas demand remains robust. While Energy Transfer (ET) and Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) often dominate investor attention, Plains All American Pipeline (PAA) is delivering superior returns in 2025.

PAA's stock has climbed more than 40% year-to-date, outpacing ET's 31% gain and EPD's 20% rise. The company also offers a forward dividend yield of 7%, compared with 6.64% for ET and 6.19% for EPD. Its four-year average yield stands at 6.90%, also higher than both competitors.

Strategic Portfolio Reshaping

The outperformance stems largely from PAA's ongoing transformation. The company completed the sale of its Canadian NGL business to Keyera Corp for $3.3 billion, using the proceeds to reduce debt. This move is expected to bring its leverage ratio toward the middle of its 3.25 to 3.75 times target range.

By exiting the NGL segment, PAA has sharpened its focus on crude oil midstream operations. Its remaining assets now span from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast, providing a more streamlined and efficient network.

On the acquisition front, PAA agreed to buy Powder River Basin assets from Silver Creek Midstream. This deal adds approximately 600 miles of crude oil gathering and transmission lines, over 350,000 barrels per day of operating capacity, and about 1.2 million barrels of operational storage. The transaction is expected to close this quarter.

Earlier, PAA acquired Cactus Pipeline, which brought 390,000 barrels per day of transportation capacity. The integration has already generated synergies, contributing to improved financial performance.

Financial Results and Outlook

In the second quarter, PAA reported net income of $1.83 billion, a sharp jump from $210 million in the same period last year. Net cash provided by operating activities rose to $956 million from $694 million, reflecting stronger operational cash generation.

Technically, PAA's stock has been trading in an ascending channel, currently near the lower boundary. It remains above the 50-day and 100-day exponential moving averages, as well as the Supertrend indicator. Analysts see potential for a rebound toward the channel's upper limit around $26.45. Conversely, a break below the lower trendline could lead to a decline toward the Murrey Math support at $21.88.

PAA's strategic moves have positioned it well within the midstream sector, offering investors a compelling combination of yield and growth. As the company continues to optimize its portfolio, it stands out among its larger peers.
