Moderna (MRNA) shares climbed more than 9% in early trading Friday, touching a fresh 52-week high of $216.95, before paring gains to trade around $208.69, up 5.9%. The broader market also advanced as Treasury yields cooled and oil prices declined, providing a supportive backdrop for risk assets.
Nasdaq-100 Reinstatement Drives Demand
The primary catalyst for Friday's surge is Moderna's return to the Nasdaq-100 index, a move that forces index-tracking funds and ETFs to add the stock to their portfolios. The company had been removed from the index after its post-pandemic decline, which saw shares fall to as low as $22. Over the past year, Moderna has staged a remarkable comeback, with its stock price soaring more than 670%.
Moderna replaces Warner Bros. Discovery in the index, which is tracked by over 200 investment products managing more than $800 billion in assets. This inclusion broadens the investor base and creates mechanical buying pressure, as funds must adjust their holdings to reflect the change.
Cancer Therapy Data on the Horizon
Investors are also focusing on Moderna's oncology pipeline, particularly the upcoming Phase 3 data for intismeran autogene, an individualized neoantigen therapy developed with Merck. The results are scheduled for presentation on October 24. Positive outcomes could mark a historic milestone for commercialized individualized mRNA cancer therapy, drawing significant attention from Wall Street.
In addition, Moderna announced Juan Andres as its new chief operating officer, signaling a strategic focus on expanding its oncology portfolio and commercial vaccine offerings. These developments add to investor enthusiasm beyond the index inclusion.
Valuation Concerns Persist
Despite the rally, the stock's rapid ascent raises questions about whether future growth is already priced in. Analysts remain cautious, with Morgan Stanley recently raising its price target to $95 from $89 while maintaining an Equal-Weight rating. Citigroup's Geoff Meacham downgraded the stock to Sell from Neutral, though he lifted his target to $80 from $60.
Both targets are significantly below Moderna's current trading level above $200, indicating that Wall Street sees limited upside from here. Investors will be watching whether the pipeline can translate into sustained financial gains over the long term.
