Lloyds Banking Group shares have advanced for three straight sessions, buoyed by an improved outlook for the UK economy from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and ahead of a busy period of bank earnings reports. The stock climbed to 105.75p, representing a 6.15% rebound from its lowest point this month. Investors are now weighing whether this momentum can be sustained or if the rally will stall.

IMF Upgrades UK GDP Forecast

The IMF now expects the British economy to expand by 1.3% this year, up from its previous projection of 1%. The upward revision is attributed to robust investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. In June, the government announced that over £6 billion in new AI-related investments had been secured, creating approximately 8,000 jobs. Companies such as AMD, Nebius, Amazon, and Ark have contributed to this influx.

JPMorgan shares are under bearish pressure ahead of Q3 earnings, but options traders expect a rebound. Analysts see upside to $368.

Despite the brighter growth picture, the IMF cautioned that the UK faces significant headwinds, including elevated government bond yields and persistent inflation. The country's debt burden remains substantial, with the deficit continuing to widen. Later this week, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will release data on economic activity for August, which could provide further clarity on the trajectory.

Lloyds is particularly sensitive to the health of the domestic economy, given its position as one of the UK's largest retail and commercial banks, serving over 26 million customers. A stronger economy typically supports loan demand and credit quality, which are key drivers for the bank's profitability.

Bank Earnings Season in Focus

Market participants are turning their attention to the upcoming earnings releases from major US and European banks. JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo are scheduled to report first, followed by other institutions. These results will offer insights into the broader banking sector's performance, which could have implications for UK lenders.

Lloyds is set to publish its third-quarter results on October 29. In its most recent interim report, the bank demonstrated resilience: underlying loans and advances to customers increased by £10.4 billion to £491.5 billion in the first half, while customer deposits rose to £500.9 billion, driven by strong commercial segment performance.

Management also raised its full-year guidance, projecting underlying net interest income above £14.9 billion and a return on tangible equity exceeding 16%. These targets suggest confidence in the bank's ability to navigate the current environment.

Technical Analysis Points to Further Upside

From a technical perspective, the daily chart shows that LLOY peaked at 116.90p in August before falling to a low of 99.64p last week. Notably, the stock formed an 'abandoned baby' candlestick pattern on October 8, a widely recognized bullish reversal signal. Additionally, the price found support at the 200-day exponential moving average (EMA) and the Major S/R pivot point of the Murrey Math Lines tool.

Given these indicators, the near-term bias appears tilted to the upside. If the rally continues, the next key resistance level is the ultimate resistance of the Murrey Math Lines tool at 112.50p. However, a break below the recent low could negate the bullish setup.

Investors will be watching the upcoming earnings season and macroeconomic data closely, as these factors could determine whether Lloyds can extend its gains or face renewed selling pressure.
