Cardano's ADA token traded near $0.1900 on Wednesday after a 5% decline in the previous session, breaking below a cluster of technical support levels. The move signals weakening demand for the cryptocurrency, as on-chain metrics and derivatives data both point to reduced interest.

Network activity contracts sharply

Data from Messari shows a significant drop in Cardano's transaction count. The network processed just 14,536 transactions on Tuesday, down from 40,063 on August 21—a decline of roughly 64%. This reduction in activity is also reflected in Cardano's Real Economic Value, which measures transaction fees and paid failure collateral. That figure fell to $1,167 from $2,796 on August 22.

Strategy's Smallest 2026 Bitcoin Buy: 250 BTC at $86,194 as MSTR Slips
Strategy bought only 250 BTC last week, its smallest purchase of 2026, at an average of $86,194 per coin. MSTR slipped as Bitcoin traded near $82,788.

Lower transaction volume suggests fewer users are interacting with applications on the network, reducing demand for Cardano's blockspace. It also means less ADA is needed to pay transaction fees, potentially weakening one source of organic demand for the token. This contraction could make it harder for Cardano to compete with other layer-1 blockchains unless activity picks up.

Derivatives show fading bullish sentiment

The derivatives market also reflects declining speculative interest. According to CoinGlass, ADA futures open interest fell by more than 6% over 24 hours to $411.50 million. This decrease indicates that traders are closing positions or that falling prices have reduced the dollar value of outstanding contracts.

Total ADA liquidations reached approximately $2.67 million during the period, with long positions accounting for $2.54 million. This shows that traders betting on higher prices suffered nearly all the forced closures. The open-interest-weighted funding rate remained positive at 0.0030%, meaning long traders were still paying shorts, but it declined from 0.0051% a day earlier, indicating that bullish demand for leveraged positions is fading.

Technical breakdown below key levels

Cardano's 5% drop pushed the token beneath its 50-day exponential moving average (EMA) at $0.1994 and its 100-day EMA at $0.2002. ADA also fell below the 50% Fibonacci retracement level at $0.1999, measured from the decline between $0.2887 and $0.1385. Losing this cluster around $0.20 reinforces the short-term bearish outlook.

The 200-day EMA remains considerably higher at $0.2442, highlighting the distance ADA must recover before establishing a stronger long-term bullish structure. The next significant downside target is the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement level at $0.1647. A decline to that level would represent a loss of approximately 15% from ADA's current price.

Momentum indicators favor sellers

Momentum indicators support the bearish scenario. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 43, signaling subdued buying pressure without placing ADA in oversold territory. Meanwhile, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator and its signal line continue to decline, with their expanding bearish structure suggesting downside momentum remains strong.

For ADA to weaken the bearish outlook, buyers must reclaim the resistance cluster between $0.1994 and $0.2002. A sustained recovery above that area could shift attention toward the 200-day EMA at $0.2442. However, given the current on-chain and derivatives data, the path of least resistance appears to be lower.

Investors are also watching broader market conditions. Bitcoin's ability to hold $80K support could influence sentiment across the crypto market. Additionally, rising short interest in ADA may set the stage for a potential squeeze if the price stabilizes. However, with network activity and open interest declining, the immediate risk remains tilted to the downside.
