Broadcom (AVGO) has seen its stock price decline nearly 30% from its all-time high, even as the company continues to benefit from the artificial intelligence (AI) boom. The shares have fallen from a peak of $492 in June to around $354, reducing the company's market capitalization from $2.29 trillion to $1.69 trillion. This divergence between strong fundamentals and weakening technicals raises questions about the stock's near-term outlook.
AI Partnerships Drive Revenue Growth
Despite the share price slump, Broadcom's business performance has been robust. The company has secured significant AI-related deals, including a 10-gigawatt agreement with OpenAI valued at approximately $300 billion. This partnership involves the development of new 'Jalapeno' chips to compete with offerings from Nvidia and AMD. Additionally, Broadcom has extended its collaboration with Google on TPU chips through 2031, and maintains partnerships with Anthropic and Meta Platforms.
In the second quarter, Broadcom's semiconductor AI revenue surged 143% year-over-year to $10.8 billion. Consolidated revenue grew 48% to $22.2 billion, with adjusted EBITDA reaching $15.2 billion. Analysts project continued growth, with average estimates for quarterly revenue jumping 93.6% to $34.9 billion, and annual revenue expected to reach $105.96 billion this year, potentially rising to $173 billion next year.
Analyst Optimism vs. Valuation Concerns
Wall Street remains largely bullish on Broadcom. Piper Sandler's David O'Connor raised his price target to $460, while Citic Securities increased its target to $525. Citigroup's Atif Malik lifted his target to $515, and BNP Paribas raised its target to $715. However, the stock's forward price-to-earnings ratio stands at 31, significantly higher than the sector median of 23, indicating that the stock may be overvalued.
Technical Indicators Point to Further Downside
The daily chart shows a persistent sell-off, with the stock forming a potential death cross as the 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages approach a crossover. The price has fallen below the Supertrend indicator, and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is below the neutral 50 level. The stock is also trading within a horizontal channel that resembles a bearish flag pattern.
Given these technical signals, the stock could experience a bearish breakout, with the next target being the psychological $300 level. This scenario would be confirmed if the price breaks below the key support at $336, its September low.
While Broadcom's fundamentals remain strong, the technical picture suggests caution. Investors should weigh the company's impressive growth against the potential for further price declines.
