BP's share price has extended its recovery, crossing the significant resistance level of 596p as a surge in crude oil prices continues to bolster the energy major. The stock, which traded as low as 445.10p in July, has now climbed to around 596.5p, marking a substantial rebound. Investors are also positioning ahead of a December strategy update from CEO Meg O'Neill, which is expected to outline the company's future priorities.
Oil Rally Provides Tailwind
The recent strength in BP's shares is closely tied to the ongoing rally in global oil markets. Brent crude, the international benchmark, has surged to $105 per barrel, up from a July low of $70. Similarly, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) has climbed to $93, well above its July trough of $67.17. The price spike is driven by heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, where attacks by Saudi Arabia and Houthi forces have escalated, and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has targeted tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has intensified, with Ukraine reportedly destroying over 50% of Russia's refining capacity. These supply-side risks have tightened the global oil market, benefiting producers like BP.
Strong Financial Performance
The higher oil prices have translated into robust financial results for BP. In its latest earnings report, the company posted an underlying replacement cost profit of $5.7 billion in the second quarter, up from $3.2 billion in the first quarter. Operating cash flow also surged to $10.9 billion, compared to $2.9 billion in the prior quarter. This improved cash generation has enabled BP to execute its strategic initiatives, including simplifying operations, strengthening its balance sheet, and investing in high-return areas.
BP has already taken steps to streamline its portfolio, aiming to unlock over $20 billion in resources. Notably, it sold a 65% stake in Castrol Lubricants to Stonepeak Partners, and divested its bp Wind Energy business in the U.S., along with non-controlling interests in U.S. onshore midstream assets.
December Strategy Update Awaited
Investors are now looking ahead to December, when CEO Meg O'Neill is expected to present a new strategic direction for the company. This will be a key opportunity for O'Neill to articulate her priorities and outline how BP plans to navigate the evolving energy landscape. The market will be watching for details on capital allocation, energy transition investments, and potential further divestments.
Analyst Sentiment and Technical Outlook
Wall Street remains largely bullish on BP. Barclays has reiterated its overweight rating, while Mizuho recently upgraded the stock to outperform. Other firms with positive stances include Citigroup, Needham, and UBS Group. From a technical perspective, BP shares have broken above the key resistance level of 582p, which was the September high, invalidating a potential double-top pattern. The stock has also moved past the 595p mark, its highest point since March, and is trading above all major moving averages, indicating strong bullish momentum.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) and other momentum indicators, such as the MACD and Stochastic Oscillator, are pointing higher, suggesting that the uptrend could continue. The next target for traders is likely the 650p level.
