Box Inc. has seen its shares climb to a record high, driven by investor optimism over its continued revenue growth and strong remaining performance obligations (RPO). The stock recently touched $41.75, marking a 95% gain from its yearly low, and pushing the company's market capitalization to nearly $6 billion. However, technical indicators now suggest the stock is extremely overbought, raising the possibility of a near-term pullback.
Steady growth underpins the rally
Box, a pioneer in cloud storage, has attracted renewed attention following its latest earnings report. The company posted second-quarter revenue of $321 million, up 9% year-over-year, while its RPO—a key metric for future revenue—jumped 15% to $1.7 billion, providing strong visibility into its business pipeline.
Cost discipline has also boosted profitability. GAAP gross profit rose to $260 million, and operating profit reached $32.6 million. The company has also expanded its client base, with notable adopters including Toyota Motor, Piper Sandler, and Red Hat.
Based on its RPO and guidance, analysts project third-quarter revenue of $329 million, a 9.28% increase from the prior year. Full-year revenue is expected to reach $1.29 billion, with further growth to $1.4 billion anticipated next year.
Valuation and analyst targets signal caution
Despite the positive momentum, several risks loom. The stock has moved well above the average analyst price target of $34.40, which is 18% below the current level. The most bullish forecast, from DA Davidson, sees the stock at $50, while the lowest target stands at $18.
Valuation metrics also raise concerns. Box trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 26, compared to the sector median of 21, and higher than peers like Nvidia, Micron, and SanDisk. This premium valuation implies the company must consistently deliver strong results to justify its price.
Additionally, using the Rule-of-40—a benchmark that combines revenue growth and profitability—Box falls short. With a net income margin of 10.5% and a levered free cash flow margin of 30%, against an annual growth rate of 9%, its combined score is below the 40% threshold.
Technical analysis points to overbought conditions
The daily chart shows Box shares in a strong uptrend, trading at an all-time high and above key moving averages. The stock recently broke through the $38.80 resistance level, which was its January peak. It remains above the 50-day and 100-day exponential moving averages, indicating bullish control.
However, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has surged to 83, an extreme overbought level not seen in years. This, combined with the stock's distance from its moving averages, suggests a potential reversal. If a pullback occurs, the first support level to watch is $38.80, which was the highest swing point in June of last year.
Investors should weigh the strong fundamentals against the stretched technicals and valuation concerns. While the company's growth trajectory remains solid, the current price may have outpaced near-term expectations.
