Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has unveiled plans to acquire GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand), a licensed digital asset exchange and brokerage headquartered in Bangkok. The move is part of the company's broader strategy to deepen its footprint in Southeast Asia, a region where digital asset adoption is growing alongside evolving regulatory frameworks.
The proposed transaction would grant Bitget, which positions itself as the world's largest Universal Exchange (UEX), access to an established local business. The acquired entity's operational experience and familiarity with the Thai market are expected to inform Bitget's expansion plans in the country.
Regulatory Approval Required
Bitget intends to execute the acquisition through its interest in BTGT Management (Thailand) Ltd., according to the company's announcement. Under the proposed arrangement, GMO Internet, Inc., its consolidated subsidiary GMO-Z.com Holdings (Thailand) Co., Ltd., and other shareholders will transfer their entire shareholding in GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand) to BTGT Management (Thailand) Ltd. or an entity it designates.
The transfer will occur upon completion of the transaction, but the sale and purchase agreement remains subject to applicable regulatory approval and other conditions. This means the acquisition has not yet been finalized, and Bitget's intended local operations depend on securing the necessary green lights.
Local Expertise at the Core
The Bangkok-based company already operates a licensed digital asset exchange and brokerage, providing an established local business that Bitget hopes to build upon. Bitget views that operating experience and market understanding as crucial to developing a lasting presence in Thailand.
“Building a presence in a market requires local expertise, an understanding of the regulatory environment and a long-term commitment to the market,” said Gracy Chen, CEO of Bitget. “Thailand is an important part of Southeast Asia's digital asset landscape, and this acquisition gives us a great opportunity to establish local operations in a thriving country. Our priority is to develop the right operational foundation while bringing Bitget's global experience and capabilities to the market.”
Platform Launch Conditional on Deal Completion
The planned purchase is part of Bitget's broader assessment of expansion opportunities across Southeast Asia, where demand for digital financial services is developing alongside changing regulatory frameworks. Rather than relying solely on its existing global capabilities, Bitget says it wants to establish local operating businesses that can respond to the requirements of individual markets and support long-term participation.
In Thailand, its immediate objective is to establish a locally operated exchange using GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand)'s market knowledge and operational experience. Following completion of the acquisition and the required approval for a change of control, Bitget intends to bring its trading platform to Thai users.
The company plans to combine its global trading capabilities with the acquired business's local expertise, while operating under applicable Thai regulations. The rollout therefore remains conditional on the transaction closing and the necessary regulatory clearance.
