Bitcoin's latest attempt to recover has failed, leaving the cryptocurrency vulnerable to a slide below the $80,000 mark. The digital asset has been under pressure as rising oil prices and climbing US Treasury yields dampen investor appetite for riskier assets.
Brent crude has surged past $100 per barrel amid ongoing Middle East supply disruptions, while the US 10-year Treasury yield has climbed above 5.3%. These moves have heightened concerns about inflation and tighter financial conditions, undermining Bitcoin's ability to sustain any meaningful rebound.
Macro headwinds weigh on risk appetite
Higher energy costs complicate the inflation outlook, and elevated bond yields make interest-bearing investments more attractive relative to non-yielding assets like Bitcoin. Together, these factors have fostered a cautious trading environment for cryptocurrencies and other risk-sensitive assets.
According to Utkarsh Ahuja, Founder and Managing Partner at Moon Pursuit Capital, the cost of capital remains the primary driver for markets. In an email to Invezz, he noted that frontier technologies, including crypto and AI, are highly sensitive to capital availability because much of their value depends on future growth. Lower real yields and easier financial conditions give investors room to underwrite that growth, while higher rates force greater discipline around valuation and risk.
Technical indicators point to continued weakness
On the four-hour and daily charts, BTC/USD is trading below its 20- and 50-period moving averages, signaling short-term bearish momentum. However, the price remains above the 200-period moving average, suggesting the longer-term structure has not fully broken down.
The $83,696 level stands as a critical resistance barrier. A sustained move above it would strengthen the case for stabilization, but so far, buyers have failed to reclaim that level. Momentum indicators such as the MACD and the Awesome Oscillator are pointing downward, while the ADX confirms the prevailing trend.
Oversold conditions are evident in the RSI, CCI, and Bull/Bear Power readings, but these alone do not guarantee an imminent rebound. Prices can remain depressed while momentum indicators stay weak, and the current macro environment continues to constrain recovery prospects.
Potential downside scenario
With the short-term market condition below $83,696 remaining bearish, the path of least resistance appears to be lower. If Bitcoin fails to reclaim this resistance, it could consolidate between $83,000 and $79,655 over the coming days.
A break below the lower boundary of $79,655 would invalidate the consolidation scenario and raise the risk of further losses, potentially accelerating a drop toward the $80,000 psychological level. Conversely, a sustained move above $83,696 would be the first requirement for a more robust recovery.
Investors are closely watching these levels as Bitcoin navigates a challenging macroeconomic landscape marked by elevated oil prices and rising yields.
