Bitcoin Cash (BCH) surged approximately 26% in 24 hours to trade above $340 on Wednesday, making it one of the strongest performers in the cryptocurrency market. The rally followed CME Group's announcement that it plans to launch regulated Bitcoin Cash futures, a move that has sparked renewed institutional interest and triggered a short squeeze.
CME Futures Announcement
CME Group revealed on September 22 that it intends to introduce Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures on October 19, pending regulatory review. The exchange will offer two contract sizes: a standard futures contract representing 250 BCH and a Micro Bitcoin Cash futures contract covering 25 BCH. This dual offering allows traders to select a contract that aligns with their portfolio size and risk management needs, with the standard contract suited for larger institutions and the Micro version catering to smaller firms and individual traders.
The contracts provide hedge funds, asset managers, and other professional investors with a regulated avenue to gain exposure to BCH or hedge existing positions without directly holding the cryptocurrency. CME cited growing demand for institutional-grade risk-management products covering liquid altcoins as a key driver for the expansion. The exchange's existing crypto derivatives business recorded an average daily volume of approximately 279,800 contracts during the first half of 2026, representing about $8.3 billion in notional value, underscoring the potential for BCH to gain visibility among traditional financial institutions.
However, the launch remains subject to regulatory approval, and actual demand will only become clear once trading begins.
ETF Conversion Hopes
The CME announcement came less than two weeks after Grayscale Investments advanced its plans to convert its Bitcoin Cash Trust into an exchange-traded product. Grayscale filed an amended registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on September 11, intending to rename the product the Grayscale Bitcoin Cash Trust ETF if regulatory and listing conditions are met. The proposed fund would trade on NYSE Arca under the ticker BCHG and hold Bitcoin Cash as its underlying asset.
An ETF conversion could make BCH exposure more accessible through traditional brokerage accounts and potentially improve liquidity. It might also attract investors who are unwilling or unable to purchase and store the cryptocurrency directly. However, the filing does not guarantee approval; until the SEC completes its review, the ETF remains a potential catalyst rather than an active source of spot demand.
Short Squeeze Amplifies Rally
The price surge was further fueled by a short squeeze, as derivatives data showed significant liquidations of bearish positions. CoinGlass data indicates approximately $7.44 million in BCH positions were liquidated over 24 hours, with short sellers accounting for about $5.16 million of that total. Long liquidations reached roughly $2.88 million, meaning nearly three-quarters of the liquidated positions were from traders betting on a decline.
When leveraged short positions are liquidated, traders or exchanges must buy back the asset to close them, forcing purchasing that can push prices higher and trigger further liquidations—a feedback loop known as a short squeeze. This mechanism likely amplified the initial reaction to CME's announcement. However, such rallies can lose momentum once bearish positions are cleared, leaving the market dependent on fresh spot buying to sustain the advance.
Technical Outlook
Bitcoin Cash's longer-term technical structure has improved after a strong rebound from the $175–$200 accumulation region, a zone that has attracted buyers repeatedly since 2020. The latest recovery has carried BCH back above its 20-period exponential moving average on the two-week chart, near $340. Holding above that average would strengthen the case for a broader trend reversal. The next technical obstacle is the 50-period EMA near $388.
A decisive close above $388 could allow BCH to extend its rally toward the 0.236 Fibonacci retracement level at approximately $449.90, making the $450 region the next major upside target—a potential gain of around 20% from the upper-$300 area. The bullish scenario depends on BCH maintaining the breakout above $340 and attracting continued buying after the short squeeze fades. If the token is rejected near the 50-period EMA and falls below $340, the attempted trend reversal could lose momentum, delaying the $450 target and exposing Bitcoin Cash to another period of consolidation.
