Base Markets is positioning itself as a challenger in the CFD brokerage space, aiming to disrupt the status quo with transparent pricing and a client-first approach. CEO Alex Kolpokchi, a veteran of IG Group and Pepperstone, argues that the industry has drifted away from core fundamentals, prioritizing flashy marketing over what truly matters to traders.
Kolpokchi, who spent over a decade at established firms, believes that many brokers have become more focused on selling an image of trading rather than delivering a quality product. He criticizes the prevalence of oversized bonuses, expensive sponsorships, and exaggerated promises, which he says do not inform clients about actual costs, liquidity, order execution, or withdrawal processes.
Base Markets aims to counter this trend by offering a straightforward pricing model. Its Base Zero account charges a commission of $4 round turn per standard FX lot from the first trade, without requiring volume thresholds or negotiations. This compares favorably to the industry standard of around $7 round turn, which often comes with rebates and tiered structures that can obscure the true cost.
Kolpokchi explains that the pricing is built into the business model from the outset, not a temporary promotion. The strategy is to attract regular traders and build long-term relationships, earning less per trade but maintaining a steady client base. For those preferring bespoke arrangements, Base Markets also offers a Base Standard account with transparent spreads and the possibility of customized deals.
The company is now eyeing expansion into the UAE, a key financial hub, as its next regulatory milestone. Kolpokchi, who previously led Pepperstone's Middle East operations from Dubai, sees significant potential in the region. Beyond that, Base Markets plans to broaden into other asset classes, though the immediate focus remains on delivering a solid CFD trading experience.
Kolpokchi emphasizes that the industry's current model often leads to poor client outcomes, with brokers earning as much as possible while clients are active, then replacing them. Base Markets intends to take a slower, steadier approach, prioritizing honesty and integrity as its unique selling points.
The team at Base Markets brings experience from IG, Pepperstone, Capital.com, StoneX, and XTB, covering dealing, market risk, finance, payments, sales, and operations. This foundation, Kolpokchi believes, gives the company a strong starting point, but ultimately clients will judge it on delivery.
As the CFD industry evolves, Base Markets' focus on transparency and fair pricing could resonate with traders who are increasingly wary of hidden costs and aggressive marketing. The company's expansion plans and commitment to fundamentals may set a new standard for what traders can expect from their brokers.
