Alphabet shares advanced more than 1.7% on Monday, recovering from last week's losses as investors rotated back into technology stocks and analysts maintained a constructive stance on the Google parent ahead of its third-quarter earnings report.
The stock's rebound came after a nearly 2.5% decline in the previous session, part of a broader tech sell-off. Monday's recovery was supported by a strong bounce in the semiconductor sector, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index climbing over 2.5%, snapping an eight-session losing streak—its longest since 2008. All three major U.S. equity indexes moved higher by midday as market participants reassessed the outlook for artificial intelligence companies following last week's volatility. Easing oil prices and relatively stable Treasury yields also provided some relief, though questions persist about the scale of AI capital expenditures and their eventual returns.
Google Prepares Another Gemini Upgrade
Alphabet's gains were partly fueled by reports of intensifying competition among AI developers. The Information reported Monday that Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic are all preparing new AI models, aiming to enhance their products and solidify market positions. Google is reportedly developing Gemini 4 Carbon, an upgrade to its recently released Gemini 4 Argon model, with strengths in visual tasks such as video analysis and website testing.
This reported development underscores Google's ongoing efforts to bolster its AI capabilities as it vies with rivals for users and enterprise clients. Additionally, Google announced new features for Gemini Notebook, its AI-powered study tool. These include Short Video Overviews, which condense complex topics into roughly 60-second videos, and interactive Learning Overviews that combine summaries with presentations, quizzes, and flashcards. The content is grounded in users' coursework, and new quiz formats offer students additional ways to test their knowledge.
These updates reflect Google's broader push to integrate AI into learning and productivity tools, potentially enhancing engagement across its software ecosystem.
Analysts Maintain Bullish Outlook
Wall Street firms continue to back Alphabet's long-term prospects, though some caution that expectations may already be priced in. KeyBanc lowered its price target on Alphabet to $410 from $435 while retaining an Overweight rating. Analyst Justin Patterson noted the company remains well positioned in the AI market but suggested much of the positive outlook may already be reflected in the stock's valuation.
UBS raised its price target slightly to $380 from $379 last week, maintaining a Neutral rating. JPMorgan, meanwhile, increased its target to $425 from $420 on October 15. Analyst Doug Anmuth cited rapid expansion in Google Cloud and strong enterprise demand for Google's custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), chips designed to accelerate AI workloads.
The analyst commentary highlights two key elements of Alphabet's investment case: its competitive position in the evolving AI landscape and the growth trajectory of its cloud business. Alphabet is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings on October 28, providing investors an opportunity to assess whether its AI investments are translating into stronger financial performance.
