US equities opened higher on Wednesday, with the Nasdaq Composite advancing 0.57% as strong quarterly results from SpaceX and Super Micro Computer reinforced optimism in artificial intelligence-related stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 38 points, or 0.07%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.20%.

Investors are parsing corporate earnings for evidence that heavy spending on AI infrastructure can translate into sustainable profits. Recent concerns about debt-financed data center investments and rising oil prices have added to market volatility.

Netflix beat Q3 earnings but issued a weaker Q4 revenue forecast, sending shares down 4.5% as analysts question growth and engagement.

SpaceX and Super Micro Lift AI Stocks

SpaceX shares jumped 8.8% after the company reported its first profit as a public entity and a 161% surge in third-quarter revenue. The space technology firm also drew attention after Elon Musk suggested a potential merger with Tesla would be beneficial. Tesla shares rose 2.3% ahead of its own earnings report due after the close. The two companies have formed special committees to explore a possible combination, according to reports.

Super Micro Computer gained 14% after the AI server maker issued quarterly revenue and profit margin guidance above Wall Street expectations. The upbeat outlook indicates that demand for AI infrastructure remains resilient despite earlier worries about sector profitability. Other server manufacturers followed suit, with Hewlett Packard Enterprise climbing 4.4% and Dell Technologies advancing 7%. CoreWeave, a data center operator at the center of AI-related debt concerns, slipped 0.37%.

Semiconductor stocks also moved higher. Nvidia rose 1.5%, Intel added 0.7%, and Advanced Micro Devices gained 2.7%. However, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has now fallen for eight consecutive sessions, its longest losing streak in 18 years.

Netflix Falls on Weak Forecast

Netflix shares dropped more than 4.8% after the streaming giant issued a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter profit forecast. Its full-year revenue outlook also missed analyst estimates, and the company lowered its advertising revenue guidance. The decline follows Netflix's recent decision to lay off 6% of its workforce, heightening scrutiny of its growth trajectory and operational choices.

The contrasting performances of SpaceX, Super Micro, and Netflix underscore the market's sensitivity to company-specific earnings and guidance. Investors are seeking confirmation that AI-related expenditures can generate stronger financial results rather than merely increasing capital requirements. Meta Platforms is scheduled to report after the bell on Wednesday, which could offer further insight into AI investment plans and potential returns.

Oil Prices and Inflation Remain in Focus

Elevated energy costs continue to pose a challenge. Brent crude futures traded near $108 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude fell 0.48% to $97.39. Recent economic data suggest inflationary pressures have spread beyond energy, strengthening the case for another Federal Reserve interest rate hike. However, markets expect the central bank to hold rates steady ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Defensive sectors have attracted investor interest amid the uncertainty, helping the Dow outperform the S&P 500 and Nasdaq in recent sessions. On Tuesday, the Dow rose nearly 530 points, supported by gains in 3M after the industrial company raised its full-year profit forecast.
