Accenture's stock has pulled back from recent highs as investors brace for Thursday's earnings report, with options markets pricing in a substantial move. The shares, which bottomed at $116.70 after the last quarterly results and rallied to $197.51, are now under pressure as the market anticipates heightened volatility.
Options data from Barchart shows implied volatility for contracts expiring this week has surged to 103.90%, far above the historical volatility of 41.25%. The at-the-money straddle, calculated using the $177.50 strike, costs approximately $13.20, implying a 7.45% up or down move by expiration. The put/call volume ratio stands at 1.39, indicating bearish sentiment, while open interest shows a ratio of 0.91.
The company's business momentum has slowed amid the AI-driven transformation. New bookings came in at $19.3 billion, down from $19.7 billion a year earlier. Revenue rose to $18.7 billion, but analysts expect fourth-quarter revenue of $18 billion, a 2.5% increase year-over-year. Full-year revenue is projected at $73.5 billion, up 5.5%.
Last week, Accenture expanded its partnership with Anthropic, the creator of Claude. The agreement includes embedding evaluators within Anthropic's team to red-team models and assess safeguards, with both companies investing at least $1 billion over five years. This follows a previous collaboration that trained over 30,000 employees on Claude-powered systems.
On valuation, Accenture appears attractively priced. The forward price-to-earnings ratio has fallen to 12.5, well below the sector median of 23 and its five-year average of 24. The company has also reduced outstanding shares to 611 million from 633 million in 2022 through buybacks.
Technically, the stock has formed a double-top pattern, a bearish reversal signal. The MACD indicator has crossed downward, and the Relative Strength Index has dipped below 50, suggesting weakening momentum. A break below current support could lead to a test of $165, while a move above $198 would negate the bearish outlook.
Investors will closely watch the earnings release for signs of stabilization in bookings and any commentary on AI-driven demand. The options market's implied move underscores the uncertainty surrounding the company's near-term performance.
